M.P. MacDougall I read. I go from extreme writer's block to extreme productivity in bursts, and the only way I've found to make the productivity come sooner is to read a lot. Sometimes I'll get so dissatisfied with the quality of something I've read that I feel driven to write something better, and sometimes I get so inspired by something else that I want to try to write to that level. Reading is inspirational, whether the inspiration is negative or positive.
M.P. MacDougall I just saw a scene unfold in my mind's eye. I tend to get scene ideas, as though it's coming from a movie. I'll have a random scene in my head, and find myself wondering how that scene might play out. For my upcoming thriller The Blood of Tyrants, I pictured the protagonist in a position to rescue an evil politician from his enemies, but deciding not to do so. The look on the politician's face in my imagined scene was compelling enough to pursue the idea. Oddly enough, once I expounded on it, that particular scene never made it into the book!
