The ability to create your own worlds, and populate them with your people. I would say, and control their destinies, but its not always true. Often my characters start developing their own views and to be consistent with the natures you invested in them they will have to act a certain way, and not always the way you intended.

I do some physical activity, like go for a run, or mow the lawn. I find that while doing this, your mind is still working and a new thread to a story line, or some new facet of character development usually surfaces.another technique that Hemingway recommended was to stop a bit short on the page your are writing and come back to it the next day. When you have something to start with, its less daunting than staring down a blank page.
