Janet Racciato I've had a couple animals in my life who seemed to know more than they should. Who did things that weren't taught and couldn't have been instinct. I'm actually already using it as the plot for my next book Old Souls. About animals who are more than animals, and who have been sent by the god of goodness to fight the forces of evil and chaos.
Janet Racciato My favorite fictional couple is F'nor and Brekke in the Dragonriders of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey, because they supported each other through really terrible events.
Janet Racciato I starting thinking about the story line for Jade when a friend of mine was killed in Afghanistan seven years ago. Jade was a way for me to deal with my feelings of grief and frustration. I thought about the story for years before I started writing. I had never written before and it was a daunting idea to try to put into words the characters that I had dreamed about for so long.
Janet Racciato There are times I can't stop writing, the words and ideas are stuck in my head nagging me to write them down. Other times I struggle to write. When I get writer's block I don't push it. I've found that if I just take a break, a few days or longer if needed, I'll get inspired again. The most important thing is to not worry about writer's block, stressing about not being able to write won't help the ideas come any quicker. Another thing that helps is to read what I've already written. This gives me a chance to edit my work, but it also gets my mind thinking about the story line and can give me ideas on what my story is missing.
Janet Racciato I am currently working on the sequel to Jade.
Janet Racciato My advice for aspiring writers is to keep writing. It is a skill like any other. You have to practice writing, edit your older work, and read examples of writing from others, to be able to improve your writing. I also recommend that you keep a small notebook with you to jot down ideas. You never know when you'll see something, or think of something that would be useful in your writing.
