Jonathan Weisman I am so embarrassed to tell you that I am just seeing this question! Oy. No, I am not of Portuguese descent, but I am fascinated by Portuguese colonial history.
Jonathan Weisman It was, took awhile too. I started writing it in 2009. About to finish a draft of my second.
Jonathan Weisman No. 4 Imperial Lane was inspired by my added year in college, when I went to live with a quadriplegic and his sister in Brighton, England. I only knew the barest of details on the family and how he had broken his neck. The story of David Heller in Brighton is largely autobiographical. The story of Elizabeth, Hans, and the wars of liberation in Africa are fiction but without doubt "inspired by true events."
Jonathan Weisman I am working on a novel about missionaries in the mountainous highlands of the Philippines, swept up in geopolitics they not only do not understand but do not even see.
Jonathan Weisman Live a life. We really do write what we know, and if our world is circumscribed, if we don't seek adventure, we won't find the stories to tell. My great regret is not doing that more. I come back time and again to my early twenties, when I roamed the world and pushed myself to discomfort. I like to think I will be there again.
Jonathan Weisman My day job is to write the truth as I see it, a journalistic truth that balances all sides. Fiction is a great relief, an opportunity to explore an inner space, to take the time to describe, explore and not worry too much about deadlines or length. Fiction is a release.
Jonathan Weisman As a reporter used to churning out copy, I rarely get writer's block, but sometimes what I am writing is just horrible. My attitude is, spit it out anyway, go back, revise, revise and revise.
