Clare Rhoden When the leaves fell, the skeleton in the tree shook in the wind. Then the killings began.
Clare Rhoden I sometimes put an idea or a whole story away for a while, and let it gather its thoughts in the back of my mind. If something's not working, or doesn't want to progress, I always think that there's a writerly-creativity reason. The best cure is to go on to another project, or read a book or write a review. You can come back to the blocked project later, or just let it simmer.
Clare Rhoden Allowing myself free rein to see where a story idea will go. Lots of times it's down rabbit holes to no purpose, but sometimes the way leads to a beautiful light. I love playing with words, and I love interacting with my invented characters - who are all much braver, wiser, fitter and together than I am.
Clare Rhoden Keep writing, and keep reading. I always feel that a day without writing is missing something. Writing - even scribbles and jottings that never make it anywhere - soothes my soul and makes me a better person to live with :-)
Make time, take time, steal time, write!
Clare Rhoden I want to write more often than I get time for it, so I'm always trying to find 'desk time'. Much of my inspiration comes from dreams, so I keep a notepad on my bedside table. I think I am the world's best writer in the dark!
Clare Rhoden I'm working on the sequel to The Pale, and also on a novel about magical cats and revenge.
Clare Rhoden The Pale is inspired by our relationship with the natural world, but the current refugee crisis really gave it impetus.
