To date, I have been more taken by its appearance in biological settings, such as branching in trees, the arrangement of leaves on a stem, the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the flowering of an artichoke, an uncurling fern, and the arrangement of a pine cone's bracts. However, it IS a peculiarly insinuating sequence that has lurked in sinuous spirals since Satan first rose in the Garden of Eden "involv'd in rising mist" and replicated it in the coils of a serpent. A spiral staircase might indeed, therefore, be containing it within the human built environment. As for the one in Melk, Austria, it had until now escaped my attention, my mind having moved more readily to the Guggenheim Museum in New York ... xx
