I keep lots of journals and diaries and have since the late 80's. I have roughly two Works-In-Progress (WIPs) at any one time, even if I've sworn off writing completely out of frustration. Which does happens. I have approximately ten completed outlines that are solid from start to finish. Most of the time I can see every page of every book long before I get to sit down and write them. It's more of a curse than a blessing, but I think that just comes from the reality of life experience and having decided to write mostly Memoir / Literary Fiction.
Everything I've ever written comes directly from my life, what I've seen and what I've been through and survived. I'm not the kind of person to make things up. The editing is about taking things away that either make the book too long or have story-lines that might be best told in another novel entirely.
Life changes on all of us drastically as we go through it. The fact that every decade feels vastly different than the last is merely a testament to good living and doing what you're supposed to in order to remain happy.

I doubt he did, but there is a possibility he has read it on his own and may have recognized his story somehow.
I received his letter in 1980-1981 while living with my grandparents in Altoona before moving to Felixstowe, England for the remainder of my childhood. I didn't keep in contact with him after that but continued thinking about our journey for several years until I decided to write the book.
Did you have a favourite part? Just thought I'd ask.
Thanks for asking. Hope you enjoyed it.
All the best,

I think the interaction with Marcus was my favorite part of the book. I felt so angry that Sebastien was alone on that bus and relieved that Marcus was there for him. I also realized how lucky I was to have such a loving, caring mother. And glad when Sebastien made it to the care of his grandparents.

When you're young, and even into middle age, you often feel that your experience is everybody else's experience. We paint life with our own brushes and it gets hard to break away from that kind of thinking and see it as it should be instead of what's been handed down.
