Mike Torreano I was just saying to my brother the other day that I wish I knew more about our grandpa's time in the Yukon during the Gold Rush days. My first published work was a short story, The Trade, that I conjured out of the snippet I knew (and I'd be happy to send it to anyone who would like to read it). What he did the rest of the two years he was there I don't know, but this question may inspire me to construct a novel-length tale around the nugget that I do know.
Mike Torreano I have a friend who said to me a few months ago, 'I have the idea for your next book'. Skeptical, I listened as he laid out a fantastic tale of gold bars hidden deep underground around the White Sands area of New Mexico. No one knows if they're still there, or even if they ever really existed.
In my novel, I don't have to prove their existence one way or another, though, it's the search for the fortune in 1891 that makes the bones for a great story.
Mike Torreano It's not so much an 'inspiration' with me, it's more like a 'have to.' I'm not so disciplined that I write at a certain time daily, for a certain amount of time. Whenever I have some free time, I sit and move the story along, whether it's for ten minutes, or three hours. That seems to work best for me.
Mike Torreano Called White Sands Gold. Set in the Las Cruces, NM vicinity in 1891. It's a search for a fabled cache of gold bars and a mysterious relic hidden deep under a nearby mountain. Murder, mayhem and romance intertwine as the story moves along. Will the searchers find the gold, and love, or will the bloody mountain keep its secret ?
Mike Torreano Write about something you're passionately interested in. You can't bring anything to a story that you don't have.
Mike Torreano Creating a story that didn't exist before I wrote it. Rewarding to see it emerge from the blank page.
Mike Torreano I percolate on a scene for a couple of days when I get stuck, then get back at it. Works.
