Aarti Patel is a naturopathic doctor and author who enjoys writing about mind-body connections in health, as well as fiction that explores individuality and society's impact on health. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family and finds rainy days to be great for writing and watching movie marathons. She believes that health is not about perfect diets, hours spent at the gym, a magic cure from supplements or pharmaceuticals, or any one particular belief or ideology. Rather, it's life itself, how we treat it and support it, and the courageous actions of the individual in the face of real life challenges. Dr. Patel's books include:

-The Art of Health
-Acne: Just Another Four-Letter Word
-Picture It: Homeopathy
-Modern Day Fables

I'll also put on headphones at times and let the music become a soundtrack to whatever I'm writing. Taking notes helps too, or approaching the work as if I'm the only reader...which at that point, I am.(less)

Comparison as a Factor in Chronic Health Issues

When a patient comes to see me for a naturopathic appointment, I want to understand what challenges are lying on the road to this person's desire to feel better. Whether it's a chronic condition they've been dealing with, autoimmunity, skin issues, trouble sleeping, fatigue, hormone imbalance, or you name it, I'm trying to see where the pressure is coming from that's taking a toll on the body.

“What was the one underlying cause of acne according to this patient, and to others who I talked to after that day? They felt they were doing something wrong. In patients’ minds, they were somehow to blame for this whole ordeal.”
Aarti Patel, Acne: Just Another Four-Letter Word

“Step one in facing acne: Recognize the words and messages it’s using against you.”

“Karma is not elitist.”

“An unreconciled past is the present.”

“When you look around and there are no answers, where do you go from there?”

“Always in life an idea starts small, it is only a sapling idea, but the vines will come and they will try to choke your idea so it cannot grow, and it will die and you will never know you had a big idea, an idea so big it could have grown thirty meters through the dark canopy of leaves and touched the face of the sky. The vines are people who are afraid of originality, of new thinking. Most people you encounter will be vines; when you are a young plant they are very dangerous. Always listen to yourself, Peekay. It is better to be wrong than simply to follow convention. If you are wrong, no matter, you have learned something and you grow stronger. If you are right, you have taken another step toward a fulfilling life.”
Bryce Courtenay, The Power of One

“If you focus on the risks, they'll multiply in your mind and eventually paralyze you. You want to focus on the task, instead, on doing what needs to be done.”
Barry Eisler

“[Dean] “My dear fellow, who will let you?”

[Roark] “That’s not the point. The point is, who will stop me?”
Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead
