Hi DaraIf your ebook is only available on Amazon, then you can join Amazon's KDP Direct if you haven't already. This is the only way to offer your kindle version free. You have to sign up for 3 months and during that time, you are not allowed to sell your ebook anywhere else. You will find all the info on your kindle page - http://kdp.amazon.com/

Thanks, Leila. My book is available on B&N as well as Amazon but I wouldn't mind going exclusively with Amazon for 3 months if I do the KDP Direct. But, to start with, I was thinking of doing some giveaway days via Twitter, FB & Goodreads. I wonder if you or anyone else in the group has experience with that? I'm not sure it's wise to just forward the file without some kind of IP (intellectual property) protection....Dara

Hi Dara,If your book is available on Amazon, they actually put it on Barnes and Noble anyway. So you could safely remove it from there and join the KDP Select program and it would show up on B&N again anyway. KDP Select has really been worth it for me. I've had about 2000 people download my book in the last three months. Before I joined, I only had about 30 downloads!
I don't have any experience with electronic giveaways unfortunately. Goodreads only does paperback giveaways. I sent off a pdf of my book to one reviewer who requested it and I admit, I was a little wary! But you won't believe, I googled my book a little while back and saw that it was on some young guy's site for FREE download!!! Apparently people rip your book from Amazon (and other sites) and then offer it for free. There are some forums on here discussing it and there's nothing anyone can do. It's the same with music and dvds. That's the downside to the internet, I guess. I really wanted to offer giveaways before I joined KDP Select but couldn't come up with any good ways of doing it. I believe if you are on Smashwords, you can do it by offering some sort of promotion code or coupon. But if you join Smashwords, no KDP Select. So I think it's a choice between the two. you voiced one of my concerns about sharing files. It maybe impossible to totally control where the content goes but from your experience it sounds like the lesser of all evils is doing the KDP Select. I'll ask my agent who's really savvy about this stuff and see what other options might exist.
Is the KDP Select program a 90-day mandatory giveaway or can you participate for a month at a time?
Hi DaraYou have to sign up for KDP Select for 90 days at a time. During that time, you are able to offer your ebook for free for up to 5 days. When and how you do this is up to you. I did 2 days in December and 3 days in February. I'm just renewing my 90 days now as I had such an amazing experience with it and want to offer my book for free again this month. When I look back at my earnings, the two months that I had my free promotions, my sales sky rocketed compared to the other months. So I think it's definitely worth it.
You obviously have to spend quite a bit of time promoting your free days, I usually spend 3 days before the free offer doing online promoting. For this next promotion - I offered two giveaways on different blogs, and then scheduled my free days for a day after the giveaways end. So when the bloggers announce the paperback winner, they can say something like - to all of you who didn't win, the good news is that this book will be free to download tomorrow! Just an idea. Hope that helps.

Hi Dara,I don't really know much about the timing. I've been playing around and trying to see what works best, and so far, I do think that Saturdays and Sundays have worked better for me. I tend to break up my free days into either 2 and 3 or 1, 2 and 2. Strangely enough, the months where I have a free promotion, my book does so much better than on other months. I therefore try to do a free promotion as often as possible, in other words, spread out my 5 days over at least 2 months. I don't know why this is but the two or three months so far, that I haven't had a promotion, I've sold about 30 or so books, and the months where I've had free promotions I've sold a few hundred (not including the free ones). Very strange. Seems to be just after my promotions. So my only advice would be to perhaps break up your 5 days and do it twice over the three month period rather than once. Of course, you have to promote your free days like crazy for it to have any effect.

You are right, our books are only free to Prime members, but on certain days, the ones we share here, our books are free to everyone. You have to catch them on those specific days. So keep an eye out for announcements on this topic. My next free offer should be in May and I'll let everyone know.

The story begins in Carnegie Hall in the 1960's, moves to Vassar College in the early 80's and lands in Berlin before, during and after the Berlin Wall.
It's a story of race, dance, emotional dysfunction and discovering authentic identity through creativity.
