Jay Warton Favourites are so difficult, but the John D MacDonald books are fantastic. The time period is a little later than Chandler and the others and for me at least that gives them a slightly fresher feel.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has found a really good contemporary writer of hard-boiled noir. I'm not sure it's still possible.

Paul Papa Raymond Chandler's Lady in the Lake and Dashiell Hammett"s Maltese Falcon were the books that sparked my love of crime noir. It is their stories that influenced me to become a crime noir writer.

Kirsten Dashiell Hammett is my favorite. However, I don't read as much noir as I'd like. I would like to read some Jim Thompson.

For me it is Paul Cain, he defined the genre in a lot of ways and then was forgotten/abandoned beyond a few die-hards / saddoes like myself :)

Equally, in a more modern setting, I would say Ted Lewis for Get Carter and of course back to basic.. Finally a classic from a bygone era...... Black Wings has my Angel, one of the finest books I have ever read!

I'm brand new to the group, but I love Chandler, Lehane, and Elmore Leonard.
