Mystery at Ocean Drive

was a runner-up in the 2010 Citizen/Pan McMillan YA novel competition.It is set in South Africa (Durban actually, although I haven't been specific).
It is a teen action adventure Hardy Boys style. It also features RC helicopters, so if you know any teenagers who fly RC planes they might be interested in reading it.

MiG-23 Broke my Heart: a War Novel

The book is set during the 'border war' of the late 80s and is about a reluctant soldier (weren't they all?) who is sent on a secret mission, when all he wants is to go home to his girlfriend.

MiG-23 Broke my Heart is a war story, a road trip, a romance and a coming of age tale, and it's a full-length novel which in paperback form would be about 250 pages.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link here to the Amazon page, but it's available for 86p on amazon.co.uk at the moment. As I've said, it's still only for Kindle, but you can download the Kindle reader free for your computer or phone or whatever. Oh, and you can download a free sample of my book first to see if you like it!

No, it's not always abuse (hence my bracketing the 'ab'), as some authors make their own threads or use a thread that seems most suitable to their purposes. That's why I started this thread, with a title that makes its purpose as clear as possible. However, there were a few occasions where authors/promoters basically ignored or misappropriated the subject of a thread, and I consider that abuse.

Also (and I don't claim to be speaking for the whole group here) I think that what authors are doing is essentially advertising, and while it's not necessarily unwelcome (this group is obviously interested in books), it has to be handled as courteously as possible. Self-promotion is a privilege that the group may allow, not the right of an author or publisher.

Completely understood, Lauren. I'm a member of a number of fora and it is very irritating when people parachute in 'twitter style' and leave ads. I agree, sharing our books is a privilege, not a right.

I'm a Brit, who spent most of her life in SA, and has now moved back to the UK. I'm a reader and writer, myself.
Recently I read Coldsleep Lullaby by Andrew Brown, and if you like a well-written whodunnit that encapsulates the feel of the Cape, then this is it.

South African writer makes Top 100 on Amazon.

Ha, I'm not so stupid after all. Last Sunday, while promoting on Amazon.com Kindle Lending Library which at present is only available in the USA, I saw The Girl was listed in two categories in the Top 100.

#83 Contemporary Fiction, and #52 Adventure Fiction (#49 for a short period).

Readers downloaded nearly 400 books in one day.

Good for you, Angelina, my fourteen year old heroine. Also known as Gogga, Lengoloi, Thumbs Up, Little Nuisance, Demoiselle, Chicken and Missy.

Shows we South Africans can write.




But my four year old Maudie is the heroine I really want to get there. This is my preferred novel, being ranked in London with To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm not too sure about that. To compete with Harper Lee is really something. We'll see.

Jacana Media in Johannesburg have just bought the Southern African rights to Saturdays Are Gold.

This is wonderful news, as Endaxi Press in UK only released the novel last July.

Feedback's been interesting. Some people LOVE it and some people HATE it. Very polarising. For some reason people are upset it's not a romance? hahah so weird getting 1 stars complaining that the book is not a love story. Makes me realise not to take goodreads ratings all too seriously.
