This one has been on my TBR for a while. I’ve read one of her previous books Migrations (also a climate change book) which I didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would so I’m interested to see how this one goes.

Scratch that, I just realised I missed how many reserves there were already 😅 I have no idea how long it'll take, haha. Maybe they'll get more copies in given how popular it obviously is.

Right now at the moment, they have 31 copies . . . but there are 163 holds on those 31 copies. I'm now 159th in line. 🤣
I have two holds on this, at two different libraries, 3 months for the first, and five weeks for the second. Fingers crossed!
I am joining! I put a hold last week and somehow I've received notice from my library that it is ready to pickup today?!? Feels like I must've got bumped up the line or something, but no complaints!

At the bigger one with 31 copies, I'm 149th in line. At the smaller one with only one copy, I'm 3rd in line. Third in line is pretty good, but each person can theoretically keep the book for 3 weeks so it could be up to a 6 week wait.
I'll join you and everyone else with a copy when I can!
It took less than 10 pages for me to become completely enthralled with the island of Shearwater. A place of raw, wild, and menacing beauty.I am about 40 pages in now and can say I really like the writing style and the characters. The story being told through multiple perspectives really fleshes out the world, by seeing it through different eyes.
I am excited for more people to start reading it!

Good to hear Steve!
I’m just starting this, enjoying it so far.Shearwater Island is fictional but based on the real Macquarie Island. I was having a Google and found this virtual tour of the research base on the island. You can see how flat it is and why sea level rise would put it under threat.

WOW!
Amazing - thank you, Janelle
You’re welcome Neta :)I knew about the whaling and the sealing, I had no idea they killed penguins for oil as well! In the heritage section of the tour it says by 1909 they were killing 3500 royal penguins a day for a bit over half a litre of oil each. This was after they’d reduced the seal populations by 70%! It’s all quite horrific to think about now.

With two months, hopefully that will be enough time for any library holds and any other waits. I'm 159th on the hold in my own library system. My library system has 31 copies, but with so many holds, it still won't be quick; this book must be popular! I think that's the largest amount of holds I've ever experienced at my library system. I'm pretty curious to see what the draw is!
Although it's going to take me some time to get my copy to join this one, Neta has a copy and plans to join. So, she'll keep you company in the meantime!
Please let us know if you're joining, and remember, don't use spoilers here, there's a separate thread for that!
