Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) What?! Blasphemy! Explain yourself!

message 3: by Girija (new)

Girija i have to agree twas AWFUL. it was so choppy and they cut out way too many things..... i guess all i can say in favor of the movie is that if you werent thinking about the book while watching it it was ok. ;P

im SO SO SO excited for the seventh ones though, look at this pic i found, its on Tottingham Court Road (thats what it is right?) Harry kinda looks drunk but... oh well.:D
http://www.blogvedete.com/wp-content/...

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) I agree about the movie. I thought that Tay was talking about the book, though, since this topic is for books.

I can't wait for the movie!

message 5: by Ayunda (new)

Ayunda Yes!! It was awful!!!!

message 6: by Pandy (last edited Nov 09, 2009 02:40PM) (new)

Pandy I love the HBP movie - it's my favorite followed by PoA and OotP! The others aren't that good, in my opinion. I don't have a problem seperating the films from the books - they're two different forms, though the film should stay faithful to the magical atmosphere of the book. I do understand why book purists might not like the films, but I'm not one them. Of course, none of the films will ever be as great as the books.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) "Book purists"...you make it sound like a religion. Or maybe it just seems like that to me because we've been talking about the Puritans for the last two months in history and English and for summer reading. XD

I just hope that, someday, a set of movies will be made that go exactly from the books, although that won't be for a while. It's like with Pride and Prejudice, how some adaptations are 6 hours long and close to the book, and some are just 2 hours, and really change. But, I'm not expecting that for Harry Potter any time soon.

message 8: by Pandy (last edited Nov 09, 2009 02:58PM) (new)

Pandy Yeah; book purists might seem like that because of the Puritans. :) I never thought about it - I guess I've just gotten used to seeing it referred to like that on other sites.
I personally, would never want a movie that followed a book exactly, but I rarely watch movies, so that might just be me.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) I know what you mean about slang used on other sites. On one of the Hunger Games groups I go on, no one knew what "shipping" was. It was really annoying, especially since I don't like saying "teams", since that sounds like you're for one person and against the other, which I'm not. And then in the musicals group I go on, I'm so used to using the phrases from the musicals forum I go on, and I always forget which abbreviations are only known on that site. :P

I watch movies all the time! Subtitled and dubbed movies are very helpful in learning a language. And I like it when there are multiple adaptations of a book (one of my favorite things about classics, yay for public domain!), since you can see all the different ways that people want to show the story in the books. Some are going to want to stay very close to the spirit and the letter of the book, some just stay close to the spirit of the book, and some don't stay close to either.

And it's always fun to rant over every little detail changed.

message 10: by Girija (new)

Girija that was DEFINITELY the best line, also when he started imitating the pincers.... aahhh priceless.

my order is pretty much the same as urs!:
books:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Deathly Hallows
3. Sorcerer's Stone
4. Half-Blood Prince
5. Goblet of Fire
6. Chamber of Secrets
7. Order of the Phoenix

and i agree completely with your order of the movies!

message 11: by Pandy (last edited Nov 10, 2009 02:50PM) (new)

Pandy I agree about the "After the Burial" scene in the movie. Dan is great there, but my favorite scene is Ron under the influence of the love potion.

My order of books:
1. DH
2. OotP
3. GoF
4. HBP
5. CoS
6. SS
7. PoA

Movies:
1. HBP
2. PoA
3. OotP
4. SS
5. CoS
6. GoF (I know I said I don't mind movies deviating from the books as long as they have the same "spirit," but I think the pacing of GoF is horrible and the film doesn't do justice to some of the characters, especially Dumbledore.)

message 12: by Ayunda (new)

Ayunda Ii actually liked the PoA. I don't really like GoF. And I don't like the movie too.

Books:
1. DH
2. HBP
3. OoTP
4. PoA
5. SS
6. CoS
7. GoF

Movies:
1. PoA
2. OoTP
3. SS (harry is soo cute!)
4. CoS
5. GoF
6. HBP

Miss Amelia My Favorite HP Character is...
LUNA LOVEGOOD!!!!
what's yours?!?!?!?!

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) One of my favorite usernames is "looney-lovegood". :D I use it on two of the forums I go to.

message 15: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia it's funny because i didnt really like the 5th HP movie, but at the same time, i do like it because it's the first time we see luna!

the best HP MOVIES (in relatrion of closeness to the book) are SS and CS. my fav movie out of all current six movies, is probably HBP. OOTP wasn't very good. umbridge could have been cast better

message 17: by Miss Amelia (last edited Dec 06, 2009 11:16AM) (new)

Miss Amelia i think they tried to make umbridge too funny, and they failed to capture her creepiness. idk but when i read the book, i found her to be a much, much more villainous character than the one in the movie. but they cast luna well (REALLY WELL!) so whatever!

message 18: by Pandy (new)

Pandy Really? I think Imelda Staunton as Umbridge in OotP is absolutely perfect!! She's really the reason I like the movie so much. I suppose she could have looked more like a toad, but it didn't really bother me at all. I love her voice and I think they filmmakers did a great job of showing her evil in pink.

message 19: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia i think evanna lynch was the best cast of all

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) Imelda acted exactly how I imagined Umbridge did, although she didn't look much like my mental Umbridge.

I felt similarly about Evanna, although her acting was a bit different than how I imagined Luna.

message 21: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia [about evanna:] really? how so?

message 22: by Pandy (new)

Pandy Yeah - Evanna seemed to be the perfect Luna to me - in appearance and manner.

message 23: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia word.

message 24: by ★ Jess (new)

message 36: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Yeah. Ever seen Sense and Sensibility? I love that movie, but it throws me off to hear Snape as Colonel Brandon...

message 37: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia it's cause we're so used to seeing him as snape! he's played the role for a really long time!

but i LOVED him as the sheriff of nottingham in robin hood...have you seen that?

message 38: by Jordan (new)

Jordan I haven't...should I?
Yeah, and Snape was the first thing I saw him as. And I saw #1 before I read it, so he'll always be Snape in my mind...
