Vittoria Fantasy all my life!! I don't know about my fav subgenre though. I think as long as it's fantasy and well written, it doesn't matter if it's dark, romance, epic, historical, urban etc.

Fred Gracely Can I ask for opinions at the risk of seeming terribly confused? I don't think of YA as a genre. I think of it as an age group of readers. Young adults like romance, fantasy, horror, comedy, mystery etc. So, what always confuses me is why I'm asked as an author to choose between Fantasy and Young Adult? That's like choosing between Coats and Children or Hats or Teenagers. Huh? How about Young Adult Horror, Young Adult Romance, etc., as genres? Do you agree that would make more sense? Young Adult as a genre is massively reductionist, right?

I completely understand your perspective. Young Adult (YA) is indeed more about the target audience than a specific genre. It encompasses various genres like fantasy, romance, and horror tailored for young adult readers. Grouping YA with specific genres, like YA Fantasy or YA Horror, acknowledges the diverse interests of that age group. Defining YA solely as a genre can be reductive, as it overlooks the rich variety of stories and themes that resonate with young adult readers. It makes sense to view it as a category that spans multiple genres.
