I am glad I don’t live in the Midwest anymore!

Jennifer So this scientist from up here at the university believes that there is only so much cold air in the atmosphere. So when the lower 48 gets that polar vortex, we see warmer temps, I have no idea if its true, but it is what happens.

Fascinating how the neighborhood looks, cramped and lots of alleys to walk, low apartment buildings on each side of the walk.

message 308: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Its a great video to show the walk. I love it.

80's for the most part. High 70's occasionally. Hawaii is a good spot to study global warming, because it is so small relative to the oceans. Small changes are magnified.

I could really go for those temps right now, temp right now is 15 degrees.

Fishface I was feeling pretty irritated by small stuff going on at work, but as I was driving to a client's house in that frame of mind I noticed what looked like a guy holding a deer upside-down by the ankles. Then I got a better look and realized he was loading a mangled deer into a pickup truck almost completely full of other mangled dead deer. Suddenly I had a new sense of how easy my job is in some ways...

I have seen the town maintenance men/women clearing dead deer and I say thank goodness someone else has the steel to do that. I too could not do it.

Do you have road kill laws ? In Alaska when a moose is sadly killed by car, there is a list of people that can be called to come get it. They have to meet requirements. People will fill their freezer and not have to buy meat at the store. Its about not wasting the animal and putting it in the landfill.

Nancy Jennifer wrote: "Lawrence wrote: "Fishface wrote: "I was feeling pretty irritated by small stuff going on at work, but as I was driving to a client's house in that frame of mind I noticed what looked like a guy hol..."

They can do that in Virginia. If you hit with your car or see on the side of the road a dead deer, elk, turkey or bear you can claim it and take it. I think you have to call animal control first and if they decide it was hit by a car you can take it. I can see if you hit it or saw it get hit by another car taking it immediately after but finding a random dead animal on the side of the road seems a little iffy. Who knows how long it was there especially in the heat of summer.

I honestly don't know if we have road kill laws, here in my town or in the state. I'd have to investigate.

Yes, he had to run to the hardware store and buy proper compression nut and compression fitting. Luckily there wasn’t any dry rot from the water. A tiny spot of hardwood was damaged but you can’t see it.

Jennifer We are at the stage where during the day the snow is beginning to melt, its slushy and messy, overnight it freezes so, the road is really rough due to the frozen slush mess. Once I get out of our neighborhood its better.
Also, I have decided that it's easier to drive is is fog at minus 45, than it is driving directly into the sun this time of year. Its brutal. Yes, I have transitions, the visor is not helpful because I am short. But we are all struggling. I can feel it.

message 328: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez So there has been ongoing construction in our neighborhood, putting in some new lines for something, not sure what exactly, and man are our road TORN TO SHREDS from these machines! They were already not great but they are definitely worse and I have to wonder if they are going to resurface them or not. Ugh.

message 329: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer As we melt there are some impressive potholes and places of road erosion to dodge. People have popped tires. Next come road construction season.

Same! A couple of the streets, I live off of, have been doing long term construction and the roads are horrific. I'd say it's 50/50 on whether they will even repave the road, my town is a joke when it comes to road repaving.

Lupe Dominguez Just had the worst ending to my weekend ever with my favorite basketball team out of the NCAA tournament *insert all the crying emoji's here* We went from being unranked to a 2 seed in the tournament so there was a LOT of hope...and we just failed to finish. So I am here at work...sad. Haha. Darn sports. My one bright spot in this crazy world.

message 332: by Fishface (new)

Fishface I thought I was getting an AMBER alert on my phone yesterday, but when I looked it was a warning about a storm headed my way with 80-mph winds. All day the weather app had been saying rain was possible today but now it was GET AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS OR YOU'LL GET A TREE UP YOUR NOSE. Suddenly the sky went dark, and the very tops of the trees started waving, just a little.

The air-raid siren kept going off every few minutes in a way I've never heard, even during a tornado warning.

It rained for half an hour, fairly hard. The wind was nothing to write home about. A couple of weak lightning flashes; no thunder. Then it stopped and we had a gorgeous sunset.

message 333: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer We had snow today and will get more through Thursday.

message 334: by Erin (new)

message 336: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez It's basically been raining since I woke up this morning. Hasn't really stopped. Hoping my basement doesn't flood.

message 337: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca All of a sudden I stopped getting notifications about group posts....

Anyway, we also have horrible potholes, and they are getting ready to do a major construction project at the end of my street *sigh*. We had 7 inches of snow last Saturday, rain Sunday and it melted by Monday, tonight we are getting more snow tonight and it will be 60 tomorrow afternoon.

message 338: by Erin (new)

message 340: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I wonder if they just shut the notifications off . who knows.

We are having a terrible break up this year and our bad roads are even worse. Also we have terrible standing water in the road from the snow melt. Massive puddles and potential for flooding of homes. We have issues and the state has no money to fix it . I expect it to get worse.

message 341: by Fishface (new)

Fishface This has been a day of small benefits. For instance, when I went to deposit my federal refund check, it was twice as high as I was told to expect, a whopping $204. On the way to the bank I got my mail and the only item was another refund check -- something I sent for was sold out. If I had gone to the ATM earlier I would have had to make 2 trips. While at the post office, I shipped out a box of books for a friend's little free library. The box was one I'd received the day before in the mail, which happened to neatly fit the items I shipped today. It's always a good day when you don't have to scout for, and rehabilitate, cardboard boxes. It also just so happened that my shipping label fit exactly over the one that was on the box I received yesterday, so no tedious ritual of covering barcodes and la de da.

The whole day went like that, just one small lucky break after another.

message 342: by Charlton (new)

Seems to be happening more often lately. Like Jennifer suggested, they may have switched them off.
