Jennifer Well Happy Anniversary to everyone who has one this month!!!
My Grandparents turned 91.

Fishface Ups and downs today. I have a headache that could kill a horse, and it's not going away, so there's that. But when a car pulled out in front of me on the way to work -- forcing me to slam on the brakes, which slung my cake upside-down onto the car floor -- it was miraculously undamaged and was still usable in the bake raffle today. Couldn't believe it. Even the orange slices I used as trimming didn't budge.

Sorry for the headache, migraine? My niece gets those and has to take some kind of medication and then go to bed (she has blackout blinds so no light gets in).

message 160: by Gertie (new)

Gertie What?! That's nuts in a good way about the cake. Hours of work not down the drain!

Fishface Gertie wrote: "What?! That's nuts in a good way about the cake. Hours of work not down the drain!"

In a way I'm not surprised. It's incredibly solid and heavy. I made a half a batch for the raffle and I swear it weighed almost 2 lbs. The full sheet cake I brought in earlier, to test whether ppl would like it enough to buy raffle tickets, felt like it weighed well over 5. But amazingly, as you can see in the photo, the flimsy plastic lid wasn't dented, either.

It wants to be a migraine but isn't; I headed it off at the pass with a handful of feverfew capsules. One more appt and I can go home and plotz.

Rebecca Thanks Nancy, and Happy Anniversary to you too!
I'm just now back after a week without my computer, ugh! I had to use a back up so at least I could work, but no fun stuff lol

message 168: by Gertie (new)

Gertie We get so used to having access to certain conveniences that they become needs more or less!

My cell phone stopped working for anything cellular recently (it's a module they won't fix and am told I just have to replace the device, sigh). So now I have a very expensive audiobook player/mini-tablet lol, while I wait for my new phone to arrive. But it's hard to do our usual stuff without the tools we are used to having.

More like "collapse from exhaustion," really. Sometimes it means flopping on your adze out of shock & surprise.

Jennifer I was in Calgary last week. Had a good visit with my sister.
My sister and I spent the night at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff. It was an experience.
The kittens are growing. We have snow. We actually had freezing rain, then snow, then rain and snow. And its all here to stay.

Fishface Just finished with the office Halloween party. Utterly exhausting. We all got here to discover that it was 84 degrees inside the building; opening all the windows and turning on the fans lowered it to 78. I must have run up and down those stairs a dozen times setting things up.

The food was good though!

message 175: by Erin (new)

Erin Glad the party went well minus the heat.

message 176: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I bet you took some fun food Fishy!

message 177: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Oh no!

I skipped out on Halloween this year... went thrifting and to a fancy dinner with my bestie. Saw lots of trick or treaters when I got home. I think next year I'll need to hand out candy, more kids in my neighborhood now!

message 178: by Anne (w/ an E) (last edited Nov 01, 2024 05:41PM) (new)

Anne (w/ an E) It was 80 degrees here today. This is the first year that I have seen anyone in costume around here [and I have lived here for 10 years] but a big family with kids recently moved in upstairs. Those poor kids were dressed in black from head to toe [I have no idea what they were supposed to be]and it was early [the sun was shining] when they left.

message 179: by Sue (new)

Sue I had polio as an infant, and now am confined to a power wheelchair. So, I do a lot of reading. My husband is super nice and caring !!

Unfortunately, I've had a number of accidents this year which has cut down on the number of books that I've read. I hope to catch up and would love a pen pal.

We have more kids in my neighborhood but the trend seems to be everyone goes to a central point and trick-or-treats, usually big subdivisions.

Anne (w/ an E) I'm going to lunch with a bunch of my family tomorrow. My cousin, her husband and their daughter live in another state so this is the only time to see them. The daughter is very smart- she isn't even 10 y/o but she is learning and speaking French, along with with acing her other classes.

The younger you are the easier it is to learn it. One reason most Americans only know a first language is that we don't try to start teaching them the second one until the language-acquisition centers in their brains are close to closing up shop.

Anne (w/ an E) Jennifer wrote: "I have shopped local for all but one Christmas gift this year. I feel good about that."

I only had one person to exchange gifts with this year, and we agreed to keep the spending low. It was easy to shop local, for me at least. The hardest part was going shopping with my mother, when I was buying for her! She has been wanting those stretchy knit gloves with rubber grips on the palms for a while now. I've been looking and can't find them anywhere. I did get some Lindt milk chocolate truffles, which are her favorite.

Anne (w/ an E) I just read that a convenience store in Japan started selling drinkable mayonnaise on November 26th! It says that it is made from milk, a "dairy-type product" and mayonnaise seasoning. OK, I like mayo on some of my sandwiches and sometimes I will lick the spoon after I use it, but I seriously doubt I would ever want to drink it.

Same, I don't think drinking it would be very ideal.

message 196: by Lawrence (new)

message 199: by Rebecca (last edited Dec 13, 2024 03:16PM) (new)

Rebecca I heard that on TV today, I like mayo but that doesn't sound appealing. It also doesn't sound much like mayo, it's more of a dairy product from what I read, not why they are calling it mayo.

Anne (w/ an E) I had a flashback today of a book I used to 'read' when I was around 3 y/o.[50-plus years ago] It was by Richard Scarry and the part I remember best is Lowly Worm falling into a vat of candy cane mix and "becoming' a candy cane that giggled when someone licked him. Anyone else remember this book?
