message 110: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I keep thinking about those astronauts. Didn't Mark Kelly spend a year up there ?

My sister and I got kittens. They are named Karl and Geoff. They are also my cats brothers. I could not say no. I will post pictures in the pet thread.

message 111: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Harnish Jennifer wrote: "I keep thinking about those astronauts. Didn't Mark Kelly spend a year up there ? ..."

Senator Mark Kelly, during his years as an astronaut, flew four missions to space, but did not spend a whole year there. I think his total days in space, not contiguous, was just over 50?

His twin brother, Scott Kelly, also an astronaut, however, did spend quite a bit of time on the ISS in one stretch. Not sure if it was a full year, and too lazy to do a deep google dive on it.

But I did find this in my first search on Mark Kelly:
https://www.kelly.senate.gov/about/

Couldn't help speaking up. He's one I kinda keep an eye on, since he's one of the Senators for my own state, AZ.

I think Scott Kelly was up there on the ISS for one year because I remember they did a twin study on the effects of long term space travel on the human body and the brothers participated (one brother in space for a while and the other on earth).

message 113: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Harnish Yep, that sounds familiar. Time in space can have serious effects on the body, especially the skeletal system. Loss of bone density, and other things.

message 114: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca They were saying on the news today how the astronauts will have to go through treatment for decompression syndrome due to a build up of nitrogen in the blood similar to divers. I sure hope they make it home safe!

message 115: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Well I had an author accuse me of using AI in my review this week (not on this platform), I do not use AI. When I told my husband he said you should have told them you have no idea how to use AI, we had a good laugh, he is 100% right lol

message 116: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Hahaha! I hope you are able to edit your review. Clearly some authors still don't know what NOT to do.

message 117: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I think now and then I may pop in here to share a new topics, since this is one of the more popular general topics (aka thread, but GR likes to call them topics).

Just created one about audiobooks today, in the authors' folder: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Some people are having AI do narration now, which is interesting. I suspect it's not as good as it needs to be yet, but perhaps isn't far from being pretty good. I really respect good narrators though, and can't imagine getting quite the same performance from AI.

Anyone if it's an interesting topic, link above!

message 118: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca UGH! I hate AI, I hate that it's taking jobs away from voice actors. A positive thing is maybe it will save independent authors money, but overall it will just steal jobs. AI steals art and people's intellectual property.
Unfortunately I was not able to edit my review, the author wasn't having any of it and refused to work with me, my editor said not to worry about it, she took care of it.

message 119: by Gertie (last edited Sep 13, 2024 11:01AM) (new)

Gertie Feel free to chat on that thread if you want!

This one is for authors to talk about audiobooks:

This one is about AI generally:

And here we have robots:

Fishface Usually Friday the 13th is a perfectly good day for me, but I finally got a dose of the superstition today. My key badge vanished into thin air and I had to borrow a spare from the office to go to a home visit. It finally turned up and my blood pressure is settling down to normal.

message 122: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Nice that you have some new (or new to me) thread topics. I will be sure to look in on them. (I need to stay out of the political forum).

AI is taking jobs, but you can’t fight technology. It will doom us. AI also takes the soul out of creativity.

Granny squares are so fiddly with soooo many ends to weave in...they drive me nuts. This took 3 months to make, where I normally average an afghan a month! It was too pretty to pass up though. And somehow I still find myself thinking how much I'd like one made with daisy squares.

message 127: by Anne (w/ an E) (new)

Anne (w/ an E) Yesterday, my aunt took me to lunch at the best Mexican [which is my favorite] restaurant in the area and then we took a boat tour of the bay. I rarely get to eat Mexican food because hardly anyone else I know likes it. I expected to pay my own way but she wouldn't let me, saying it was for my birthday. At least she let me pay for dessert and a drink later because I pointed out that her birthday is next week.

message 128: by Erin (new)

Erin Sounds like a nice time out!

Jane Anne (with an “E”) - where did you go? We had Mexican yesterday, too, but just On The Border as it was a quick last minute thing.

Fishface A co-worker just came over to ask me if everything was all right. I asked why and he said the building was surrounded by cop cars. Then another co-worker came over saying she was petitioning a client -- the one who attracted all the cop cars -- into the hospital. I checked my cubicle calendar: it's a full moon.

Lupe Dominguez I am so ready for my mini vacation that I'm about to go on, I can't even deal haha.

message 133: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I got a new car. The engine was in need of replacement in my old car. I sold it and got a Honda HRV Sport. I had to get it from a dealership in Anchorage. The dealership here did not have what I wanted until November. I did most everything via phone/text and online. My sister and I flew down last Saturday morning , the dealership picked me up and an hour later I left with my car.

We did a little shopping in Anchorage, stopped at Target in Wasilla and then drove home , Car drives great . :)

Congratulations! Honda's have a great track record.

We have been thinking about a new car. I drive an '08 Mercury, still has less than 100,000 miles on it. We would sell that and I would drive my wife's Hyundai, with her getting whatever is new. I hate car shopping.

message 136: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Harnish I've been struggling with the idea of replacing my car soon. I have an 18 y.o. Kia Sedona minivan. But I work from home full time, so I hardly drive at all; maybe 1,000 miles a year. So the mileage on it is very low. And of course, it's paid off. It runs pretty well, but it's got a little bit of body damage; the usual scrapes and dents that any old car picks up. But it's 18! And I'm turning 60 this winter, and would like to have a new-to-me car replaced and paid off before I retire (hopefully in the next 3 to 5 years)! So, yeah, I'm dithering.

And of course, I'd like a hybrid next, but doubt if I can find one that works for my needs (while I don't drive much, when do I go out and about, I often have to haul a lot of stuff around for my side job; making pottery: getting clay and supplies, delivering wares to galleries, doing art fairs, etc). So, I need something on the larger side, like another mini van or SUV. And hybrid versions of those are still new enough to market that there may not be many in the resale pipeline, or they might be priced higher than I'm willing to absorb, so I might have to stick with a regular gas model. And I'm the kind of person who keeps cars for a very long time. My current one is only the 6th car I've ever owned. The next one might possibly be my last one.

Oy!

Tim Berube Anniversary today. Going for a hike in the mountains, where we got married, but, I was reading Lupe's post and,

My wife wants to go on a road trip so bad!

I don't know what it is, Lupe, I saw you write "Mini Vacation", and my mind filled in, "Road Trip",
Probably because the next post was Jennifer talking about Alaska and her car :D

I recently had a man from Alaska fill in for my driving partner, and he filled my mind with images of The Alaskan Highway,
Bears, Moose,
Forests, Mountains, and,
The Sea.
Sigh.
It's fun reading what everyone is doing (Under the full moon :D )

message 141: by Tim (new)

Tim Berube Thank you, Erin!
We had a great hike, sat in the mountains till dark then walked back, scaring a couple of deer and watching for cats!

I'm rereading your post, Lisa.
The 1K miles a year got me the first time, oy indeed!
It's really wonderful to be able to drive that little.
I remember working from home, having my hewing yard right out the back door,
Those were some great years.
Now, its like, 250K miles of driving a year!
It is very dangerous on the road for cars

We are going out to dinner tomorrow, not sure where yet.

Tim Berube Nice!
Congratulations on 25!
Ours was 15.
What kind of food / restaurant, do you choose to celebrate a quarter of a century?

message 144: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I am so attached to my car, after having it for 19 years. It got nearly totaled once when it was stolen, and 9,000 bucks (insurance) later it was repaired. We've even moved from Seattle to Madison, with my 2 cats at the time. I kinda wish I could just keep the same car forever.

Rebecca Oh and Jennifer, congrats on the new car! I'm waiting for mine to fall apart, it will be soon.
Gertie, that is how I felt about my Impala, I loved that car but it ended up with a cracked block so I had to get a new one (this was many years ago, it was a 2005 I believe).
