Dixie Dylla I just read my first Mark Goodwin book… Days of Lot books 1&2. Book 3 comes out in October. Okay, I’m hooked. Now I’m starting Days of Noah. I like Godwin’s writing, and the way he puts the Bible Revelations into his work. Has anyone read his other books? Which were your favorites? I think Mr. Godwin’s writings are going to take up a good bit of my reading time this summer! Happy reading!

Farmer Lynn Happy 4th everyone! 🇺🇸🎇🦅🎆

message 53: by Farmer (new)

Farmer Lynn I was writing my email penpal today who's developed an interest in homesteading. I made a list of all of the topics I have ebooks for that I consider to fall under homesteading in case he wanted to get a head start by researching....and now I'm kicking myself for not reading more non-fiction...I've only hit a fraction of these. There's so much I want to learn! And it's all so cool!!!

The list:
aquaponics, backyard berries, basketweaving, beekeeping, blacksmithing, botany, breadmaking, broth making, butchering, candle making, canning, cheesemaking/home creamery, chicken keeping, cider making, composting, dairy cows, dairy goats, dehydrating, distilling, edible flowers, fermenting foods, foraging, general homesteading and vegetable gardening, grazing animals, greenhouse growing, growing cut flowers, growing elderberries, growing linen, growing spices, growing tea, handicrafts, home repair, leather crafting, making hay, making vinegar, maple syruping, market gardening, meat rabbits, medicinal herbs, mushroom hunting, orcharding, pasta making, pickling, raising beef, raising pigs, root cellaring, sausage making, seed saving, sewing and mending, smoking and curing meat, soapmaking, soil science, spinning yarn, weaving

Fishface This is basically how my life goes en ce moment

To give a small example that won't violate HIPAA, I spent an hour in a meeting today trying to find something I need in the files of someone I've been appealing to for YEARS to give this to me. He kept saying "we'll get to it" and now he'll never be back. I need it to do a major part of the job I took over from him 5 years ago.

It isn't there. I mean it is, but the file I found was last updated BEFORE I took over the task, half a decade back.

Our only hope is that he kept the hardcopies in his office, so I can update it myself. Won't take more than half a work week and hey, what else have I got to do, right?

Charlton So Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Lake Jackson and Galveston, it came in early Monday morning around 3:00 or 4:00 am.
For all those affected I do hope things are all right for you. I just got power back about 3 hours ago. Lost one tree limb about 12 ft. long but it didn't damage anything.

Glad to hear you didn't sustain a lot of damage and you were fortunate enough to get power back. I have seen the news report out of the area, it is a terrible storm.

I think my area will be seeing what is left of Beryl by the end of the week, not on the level of what has happened but this thing doesn't seem to want to go away.

message 58: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer So glad you are ok Carlton. At my grandparents house and we are supposed to get rain for 24 hours from the remnants of the storm.

Anne (w/ an E) I was supposed to go check out some dogs for adoption with my uncle, but his wife has Covid. I'm sure she's been immunized so it shouldn't be bad.
I wasn't sure if this should go in the pet discussion or the Covid discussion, but it goes here, too.

message 62: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez After a long 17 hours we made it to Colorado this morning!!! That drive is something else haha!

message 63: by Anne (w/ an E) (new)

Anne (w/ an E) I was putting a big box on my closet shelf last night [evening, actually] and I accidentally broke the light bulb in there. Evidently, the last person to change the light bulb also broke it and left the metal in the socket, so sparks were flying when I shut off the breaker. Now there is no power in either of the bedrooms. My neighbor was charged $25 just to have someone change the batteries in her smoke detector so we thought it would be best to wait until Monday to call about the light socket. I might have been able to fix it myself if I had a big enough potato to stick onto the broken bulb and the metal base so I could pull it out, but no.
I am sleeping on the large loveseat in the living room since I can't use the AC in my bedroom and there is one built-in to the living room..

Belated happy and blessed birthday! Make it a birthday month like my wife does.

message 74: by Fishface (new)

Fishface Quite a day. I went to a home visit and must have flicked off 15 fleas as we were talking. I realized with horror at some point that my bookbag was on the floor where they were massing like the seagulls in THE BIRDS. I went straight home and boiled my clothes, my bookbag and everything else, missing a required Zoom training. I got back to the office, tried to enroll in another one of the trainings and was unable to do it. Really should not have gotten out of bed this morning.

message 75: by Erin (new)

Erin Sorry to hear you had a rough day. Fleas are awful, I was bitten by one at a place I used to work at, I'll never forget how itchy the bites were.

message 77: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Fleas are a menace. Sorry you had to deal with it, Fishface.

message 78: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Good Morning,

Happy to see everyone. Fleas are gross. We don't have fleas, ticks or snakes. Just saying if anyone wants to get away from them.

I am back from my visit to my grandparents. My youngest sister and I went together. We had a great visit, saw 4th of July fireworks. It was the first time ever for her ! We drove to Ohio, I dropped her at the airport, she traveled onto New York, and I went to visit an aunt and uncle.

At work, our office has moved out of the hospital and into a new location. We are not thrilled and its going to be a huge change. But we will make the best of it.

I do want to share that my son and I are doing well.

Charlton I watched the opening ceremony for the Olympics, yes it was pretty amazing. But professional athletes don't belong, that was kind of the whole point!

message 80: by Fishface (new)

Fishface OK, this morning I thought I was having an attack of vertigo as I left the house. It got better and I ran my errands. Coming back in the house I felt the ground tilt under me again, just as I noticed what looked like a big crack in the flowerbed by the front stoop. As I stepped back to take a better look, the "vertigo" vanished and I realized the real problem was that my front stoop had made itself into a wheelchair ramp overnight. It's tilted forward so the leading edge is almost underground.

Swell.

I saw some of the opening ceremony but I agree about the professional athletes, I saw a lot of negative talk about that especially with Lebron James.

message 83: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence I’ve been enjoying what I have seen of the Olympics so far though I missed the opening ceremonies. I caught some fencing, equestrian (loved it!), beach volleyball, and today, swimming and women’s rugby (loved that too!).

I agree too on that it should be amateurs. I don’t wish to see the professionals in the team sports (or any of the events for that matter).

Charlton I felt like crap yesterday and today, yesterday I took a Covid-19 test and it showed positive. At first it felt like a bad flu, but today it's been much worse. And to make matters worse, I hadn't got my meds yet.

Fishface Without warning, the garden app I use shorted out. I uninstalled it and went to reinstall it, and found to my horror that it is no longer available. There go literally thousands of garden photos I had saved only there. Many of them were rescued from GrowIt, which at least warned us before it shut down. So vexed.

message 89: by Charlton (new)

Charlton Oh Fishface, no warning that's rude.

message 90: by Fishface (new)

Fishface Charlton wrote: "Oh Fishface, no warning that's rude."

I keep hoping it's just a temporary thing, but not even having the app available to download looks pretty ominous.

message 91: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Oh that sucks Fishface! I find it very frustrating when you can't still download an old app. I'd rather they just say "we won't update it anymore, use at your own risk" and give people time to move their info at least.

message 92: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I hope you're starting to feel better Charlton.

It seems like it affects everyone differently. When I finally got it (lost my precious Novid status haha) my symptoms weren't terrible but I was exhausted for a week plus afterwards.

message 93: by Charlton (new)

Charlton Thanks Gertie, not sniffing and sneezing or coughing as much so that is good. But I can fall asleep at any time of the day and I still have no real hunger .

message 94: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Sounds like progress. Hopefully you'll enjoy a proper meal when you're up to it!

message 95: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Charlton, I hope your feeling better. I had covid last year after working the polls. I was in bed for a week.

Not much is going on. Our office has moved out of the hospital and into another building that's a couple miles away. They will eventually have all admin there. And all the clinics will move to the hospital to make all medical stuff under one roof. So that's been a change. People are not thrilled, but we will adjust.

message 96: by Charlton (new)

Charlton Actually I am feeling better Jennifer, thanks. Still with a stuffy head.
The test says I'm negative.

message 97: by Fishface (new)

Fishface I got my answer about my water softener that wouldn't stop running. It isn't the water softener at all; it's a water-main break outside my building that simultaneously accounts for the funny little waterfall pouring out of the base of the dead tree in my backyard, the rushing sound coming from the softener and the fact that the soil has disappeared from under my front stoop, causing it to snap off the building and bury itself in the ground.

Fishface Rebecca wrote: "OMG that sounds like a mess, is the city going to fix it?"

It turns out to be the complex's responsibility. They had a crew out today. Apparently the worst of it is under my neighbor's place, not mine, but they want to drill a hole in my basement floor to make sure the countless gallons of water washing thru didn't leave a great big empty space under my foundation. The guy next door is almost never home and apparently he never goes in the basement (making me wonder how he ever does his laundry) so he didn't notice the cave-in of his floor down there. My basement is damp, but not obviously giving way...

The one piece of really good news is that they're going to pull out the Bradford pear between my door and his. It seems to have caused the break. It leaves slimy little inedible fruits everywhere, and it smells like feet when it blooms. Maybe I can raise flowers in front of my place when it's gone!!!
