LOL. I thougt "rule-breaker" sounded better than "cant'keep-upper." We all fall into the "so much to read, so little time" category. Just as I think I'm caught up they drag me back with new additions! :o)

L J I read some Christmas books at Christmas but read as many or more in summer when outside temperature reaches 100°F or hotter. Christmas in July.

As for keeping up, I seem to have given up on that. The last few months I've mostly impulse read.

Thistlewood Manor Murder at the Hedgerow (Eliza Montagu #1) by Fiona Grace
Thistlewood Manor: Murder at the Hedgerow
by Fiona Grace

Hoopla November bonus borrow that I put off reading. As usual with Grace I have mixed feelings. To me most of her books feel more like novels in which murder happens rather than mystery novels.

Forgot to mention deceptive cover: animal in book is bloodhound not cat

Alice I finished book two in the series Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust (Deep Dish Mysteries, #2) by Mindy Quigley . I quite enjoy this series. They deal with real life issues of trying to keep a new business going, complex relationships and dealing with elderly who may be cantankerous. I love the cat Butterball.

QNPoohBear A Body on the Doorstep A Body on the Doorstep (London Ladies' Murder Club, #1) by Marty Wingate

Fun concept and it kept me reading because I got distracted by a red herring. If I had read it in one sitting, I would have remembered the clue. Hopefully the next one has a tighter mystery. I already have that one from NetGalley too.

What does that mean? I keep seeing "tight" used to describe mystery books, but have no clue what it means.

message 958: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear Tight mystery- one that has a coherent plot that makes sense and isn't easy to solve. That's my definition anyway.

I love the title. I wonder if it was the author's idea or the publisher's.

I have to say that there are so many cozies with clever titles. Not always able to see the cover of books, titles are what draw me -- authors too, of course, but clever titles that grab are sometimes hard to ignore.

Karen Fatal Fascinator (Hat Shop Mystery, #7) by Jenn McKinlay
Ending my week with Fatal Fascinator from Jenn McKinlay's London-based Hat Shop series.

This series can be up and down for me and I don't really know why. I think this is the first one I actually just enjoyed without the whatever.

Thanks. At least now I have an idea about what some people mean when they use this term.

Karen Hanks and a Hitman (A Knitty Kitty Mystery, #3) by Tracey Drew
My last cozy of the year:Hanks and a Hitman by Tracey Drew

It's from her Knitty Kitty series. It's a cute, fun series set in New Zealand. In the first couple of books, but cats "helped" solve the mysteries. In this, they were not as important to the overall story. I'm not sure whether or not that's why I enjoyed this one more than the others I read. Whatever the reason, I enjoyed this quick read that held my interest.

It also was one I needed to hit a secondary goal in a cozy reading challenge I do each year. I needed an historical mystery or a mystery set outside the US. Earlier this year I TBRed a series set in Canada. Could I find that when I went looking? Of course not. However, I still had (have) a couple of Knitty Kitty books to read. Perfect!!

message 964: by Helen (new)

Helen Just finished An Accidental Murder (Yellow Cottage Vintage Mystery, #1) by J. New . At 122 pages it is slightly too short for most challenges, but as a historical cozy with supernatural elements, it should appeal to quite a few. The rest of the books in the series are longer.

Just added the series to my TBR. May be my first read of the new year -- though I have something started I need to finish. We'll see.

Thanks for the introductions. I signed up for the author's newsletter to get the prequel short story. I hope it comes through.

Zermeena Happy New Year!

I read A Scone of Contention. It was okay, I didn't like it as much as the rest of the series. In this book Hayley and Nathan are on non-honeymoon honeymoon in Scotland. This one didn't work for me.

I listened to Borrowed Crime and Pouncing on Murder. I enjoyed them both more than I did the first two in the series. This is a series I will definitely continue.

message 974: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear Thank you, Barb! I couldn't get the link to her newsletter to work on the tablet while I was reading. I meant to do that on the PC later. Oh I had it marked "maybe" already! I can't wait to read it. I enjoy the characters very much and Mabel's middle class background and status as a "useful woman" is different. I like the queer representation as well. I want to hang out with Cora and Skeff. Skeff is pretty cool for a reporter and Cora is so sweet. Gladys the terrier is so cute and Win isn't bad either.

Barb Yes, I love the cast of characters, even Miss Kerr :) My grandmother's sister was named Mabel, so I thought of her when reading these books lol I couldn't get the link to her newsletter to work on my kindle either.

Barb Finished this last month, posting my review now for the New Year's Intentions challenge :)

From one of my favorite cozy series, Die Like an Eagle, by Donna Andrews
Another fun entry in the series, this time revolving around Josh and Jaime's baseball team. I've come to like and even appreciate Meg's family and friends and the way they're always willing to pitch in, even at the last minute. It's nice to have a mother who does what she can to help her grown daughter, rather than snipe at her about finding bodies or cultivating the "right" friendships :)

At first, it appeared that the murder victim was a case of mistaken identity, and it took a while to figure that out. There were several serious suspects to think about, but I couldn't decide who was the actual culprit until the confrontation scene near the end of the book. Given that character, the motive made sense, but I wouldn't have figured it out on my own.

I have been working my way through this series over the last couple of weeks. I really enjoy them. I listen more than I read these days, and I can only find the first six books on audio recording.

message 983: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker I think the first six were all published by a small press that has folded. Maybe she didn't continue with the audio after she started publishing them herself?

Either way, that's weird.

Mary I'm a little off season, but I'm reading Pooches, Pumpkins, and Poison by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. It fit my time frame - needed something short to read before an expected ARC arrived (and it came today!)
