My new book, "Reflections of Light, " is a book about love. It is also a book about grieving and how I worked through that process, enabling me to continue living after the loss of my husband.How does one explain to others what you are feeling when you lose your spouse? That’s just it. You can’t. Because you don’t know yourself. One feels powerless, paralyzed and numb. Somehow any explanation seems trivial and nonsensical. It is a powerfully personal experience unto oneself and everyone deals with it differently.
Our family had so many losses before that, and I was still grieving over them. Losing David really was the last straw for me. Yet, writing this anthology helped me through this bereavement process more than I would understand at first.
The anthology evolved after I used poetry/prose to express what otherwise I couldn’t say aloud, in a language that perhaps might translate better on paper. I tested the waters a little while I was doing this, and received positive feedback. Astoundingly, I found my words were transferable to anyone who has lost a loved one; that they were applicable to more than losing a husband. I discovered that many were able to relate to having lost other loved ones – children, parents, friends, etc. – not just their spouse; and not from my perspective, but from their own.
The first twelve months after my husband’s passing, were devoted to writing about how I was feeling each month. From there, I found peace and comfort, feeling deeply all my losses, even those that had occurred when I was much younger, but were still locked within, and never properly expressed. It was a painful process, but fulfilling, and I came out the other end better for it. It brought about a deeper appreciation for everyone in my life – not just those I have lost – and gave me the wherewithal to express my love to them as well; to let them know that they were just as important to me, if not more.
Sometimes through grief, we lose all perspective of those left behind, who are also grieving. It is a very selfish process and one must learn to let others in. This, then, was my attempt at putting an emotionally positive spin on losing a loved one, if that was at all possible. It really is a book about love. There is nothing positive about losing a loved one. Yet, there are different perspectives that may be explored. So, explore I did. It was soul work.
My wish is that it will be as useful and as comforting to others, as it was for me.
