I enjoyed the role Johnny plays in the story; he comes in to complicate things and raise the emotional impact of the story. Sam to the Ends of the Earth is a rare gem and I loved it the way I loved Stephenie Meyer’s writing, but there is more realism in this one than in Meyer’s. It is a delightful read."

Arguing about whether or not
such a thing

One of them has a headphone in,
listening to…
whatever,
as he’s talking
The other one is on his smartphone,
doing…
whatever,
giving his rebuttal
Both neatly dressed
Collars white
Briefcases of black and brown leather
Cigarette packs, peeking out of
their shirt chest pockets,
winking seductively at
whoever catches a glimpse of them
and
blowing kisses to kids
We speed down
the dusky subway tunnel,
in this steel enclosed
human-sewage
transportation machine,
flanked on both sides
by wall,
after wall,
after wall,
after wall,
soiled with ad,
after ad,
after ad,
after ad;
Liquor companies
Flawless bodies chiseled by scalpel wielding
sculptors
Ripped rags branded
with some demon designers
putrid logo
Quit smoking ads
Start smoking ads
Starbucks
Costa coffee
McDonalds
Burger king
Poisoned sugar drinks
and their healthy alternative;
sugar-free poisoned drinks,
that come in all the artificial fruit flavors,
from tangy lime
to supple-breast-sweet cherry,
that mixes interestingly
with your favorite whiskey
Movies with hidden messages
about how much better your life could be,
if you only try a little harder,
if you only obey a little better
Everything perfectly designed
And laid out
to numb
your mind

I listen to the two strangers argue
and look around;
Dead people
Decomposing faces
Filthy breaths
and diseased coughs
Eyes so black
the irises doesn’t exist,
they burned off long ago
from exhaustion
Too much “yes sir, no sir”
I get up
And get off
at the next
stop
But there is no escaping
the
zombies
