Book Chomper This series has been around for a while - yet never seems to get much of a mention - Eileen Wilks - World of the Lupi.

Lily Yu - Homicide/FBI detective is a kick ass heroine with a badge, a strict code of honour and a rare sensitivity to magic. Her entanglement with Rule Turner - Prince of the werewolves - leads to action, adventure and romance.

Start with book 1 - Tempting Danger Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks

message 52: by The Queen of Swords (last edited Sep 09, 2023 12:01PM) (new)

The Queen of Swords So many I love have already been mentioned, so I just like to say I completely support >> Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Cat(herine), Kim Harrison's Rachel, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson, Kate/Nevada/Julie aka Aurora by Ilona Andrews, Jane Yellowrock etc.
As for Hailey Edward's books: the one earlier mentioned was great, but definitely also read Potentate of Atlanta and the Black Hat Bureau (I actually liked these 2 even more), Deborah Wilde (Magic After Midlife, but also the Unlikeable Demon Hunter).

I still like to add some extra in no particular order:

1. Chloe Neill Chicagoland Vampires (which also has an Heirs of Chicagoland afterwards)
2. Diana Rowland - Kara Gillian series. I like her zombie series too, but it's a tad different
3. Robyn Peterman's Fashionably series. Please do NOT read if you're quickly shocked. There's plenty violence, oodles of swearing, sexy times and Satan is a main character. Peterman wrote batsh*t crazy characters into a hilarious series, but it takes a special kinda of humour to appreciate it. (If you have that and know more funny UF series, tell me! )
3b. Good to the last Death series, also by Robyn Peterman.
4. Uncanny Kingdom- Stella Familiar (London Coven)
5. Uncanny Kingdom- Rita Hobbes (Hexed Detective)
^^ all the Uncanny Kingdom series are written by David Bussell and M.V Stott - sometimes going by Matthew Stott. Tbh I prefer their male MC's in both the Spectral Detective and Dark Lakes series, and those series are better too, but these are good too. NB. There are 2 more FMC series. Branded and Uncanny Ink. I considered Branded "meh" and haven't read Uncanny Ink yet.

6. L.R. Braden's The Rifter Series (Mira). I gave book 1 five stars in my review. I almost never do so. Going to review book 2 soon.
7. Amanda M. Lee. First read the Covenant series in the right order, then the Aisling Grimlock series and then Death Gate Grim Reapers. While all 3 series can be read without reading the others I first read Aisling, in which constantly a very powerful mage would turn up. Turned out: she was the FMC of Covenant College/Dying Covenant. The Grim Reapers books had its own FMC, but Aisling and family turn up too. Often. Hence me saying: read them in the correct order to enjoy them best ;).
8. Amanda M Lee. Yes, yes, she was nr7, but the 3 above are somewhat related. The Moonstone Bay series is a cozy paranormal/ fantasy mysteries and fun to read in between because it's good but less heavy. But the FMC is badass... she just didn't know it ;).
9. Annabel Chase, Federal Bureau of Magic series
10. Annie Anderson, Grave Talker + Soul Reader series (intertwined. See her website for best order).
11. Tracey Martin, Miss Misery (not exactly 'clean')
12. Kalayna Price - Alex Craft series

And that was a look into a part of my 2022/2023 reading list when it comes to FMC kickass characters. I hope you'll find sth to your liking. I know I'm always looking for new authors and series!

Laney Hi--

Since this is one of my favorite type of heroine in all types of media I made a Kickass Heroine Fighter Goodread list. It includes some of books listed in posts above, but some that haven't been recommended yet. Hope this helps.

message 54: by Fee (new)

Fee Let me add Wynter Dellavale to this list. She's the heroine in Suzanne Wright's new series.

Start with book 1 - The Wicked In Me. The Wicked in Me (Devil's Cradle #1) by Suzanne Wright

Kickass. Funny. Vengeful. Smart. Deadly.

EmmaMay Looking for kick butt heroines along with a truck load of funnies, and some major sizzle?
Then lucky for you book 2 of Jane Cousins awesome Vexatious Valkyries series is out now.

No one does bloodthirsty banter better than this author:

A Demon Is Forever A Demon Is Forever (Vexatious Valkyries, #2) by Jane Cousins

Stuck at a deadend job at Valkyrie HQ, Shaw must team up with the flirty, fun Demon/Kaleb. Wooing Godly clients. Soothing pissed off she-demons, thwarting assassination attempts - so many little & big laughs, along the way these two try to fight their building attraction but thankfully they can't.

Do yourself a favour and start with book 1 - What's Up, Buttercup? What's Up, Buttercup? (Vexatious Valkyries, #1) by Jane Cousins

Snark & sizzle - you'll love these kick ass heroines.

message 56: by Leahmichelle3 (new)

Leahmichelle3 I started Jan 24 with The Sun, the Storm, & the Shadows by Mikayla D Hornedo. I got it on “stuff your kindle” day- it’s so good! Ft. Two bad ass heroines ❤️

I did read this and freaking loved it. I felt like some liberty was taken with the mythology that made me stretch my imagination a wee bit, but I still enjoyed it a LOT. (I'm a very character driven reader.)

message 62: by E.H. (last edited Apr 29, 2024 06:11AM) (new)

E.H. Drake I'd also like to add Aletheia by Megan I. Tennant. 736 (yes, that's her name, trust me it makes sense) is an incredible character.
Aletheia

Hey thanks for the heads up! Honest oops on my part so I did delete it. No excuses, I follow a lot of groups and got my dumb self mixed up. I wasn't trying to being disrespectful and I'll try to pay more attention to where I am next time.

Happy reading all

message 65: by EmmaMay (new)

EmmaMay How about kickass Kat from the kingmaker chronicles?

The first 2 books in the series are excellent - we won’t mention book 3 where things go seriously astray.

Book 1 A promise of fire. A Promise of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles, #1) by Amanda Bouchet

Malissa Jade from the Dowser Series by Meghan Ciana Doidge (and all the spin-off series and the new series she is writing)
Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter
Leveling up by KF Breene
The Accidental Queen by Kristin Painter
Forty Proof series by Shannon Mayer

Yes, not to be cheeky, but I purposely wrote The Hunted series to empower women, show that growth through emotional intelligence and resilience is possible in women protagonists. I hope you enjoy the entire series if you get the opportunity to read them.
The Hunted
The Damned
The Aligned
The Condemned
The Delivered

message 68: by Kaytie (new)

Kaytie the Blood and flame saga by EA Winters, the 1st book is called the Dragon's Kiss and it has a kick butt female assassin as the main lead. it's 4 books of political intrigue, dragons, assassin plots, war and a slow burn romance (no spice).

also A Thousand Steps Into Night by Tracie Chee has a strong female lead, but a different kind of strong. she's just an ordinary girl doing what needs to be done. Befriending spirits and gods, defeating demons, rescuing other damsels in distress, etc.

message 69: by E.H. (new)

E.H. Drake I love when the strength is in the character's.... well... character

message 70: by Dahrose (new)

Dahrose Dylan St. James Omega Concealed (Dylan St. James Omegaverse #1) by Elizabeth Dear our h, Dylan, not only told us continually that she was kickass - she followed through & delivered.

Our girl is no shrinking violet, assume her 3 mates in later books in the series will eventually learn to deal with her independent ways

message 71: by Rachel (new)

Rachel R graceling has a great kick ass FMC and romance too

message 72: by Kaedryn (new)

Kaedryn Leigh Hey folks, just joined and wanted to share some great books I’ve read with Kick butt heroines. Big fan of Alex Westmore’s Riders of the Apocalypse and The Silver Legacy. Her other series I enjoyed too!
Darkness Descends
Ride for Tomorrow

message 73: by Dahrose (new)

Dahrose K.A. Linde is a new author to me. I'm halfway through - A wren in the holly library

Not only is the book fresh and awesome, our heroine, Kierse, is a kick ass thief with a layered troubled back story.(fingers crossed the book finishes strong)

The Wren in the Holly Library (The Oak & Holly Cycle, #1) by K.A. Linde

message 74: by Michael (new)

Michael Black at the risk of sounding self-serving, I think my main character Rowena fits that description. she's a bit of a gunslinger.

I'd post a link to the cover but I'm not sure how to do that yet haha

but I AM currently looking for someone to read it!

message 75: by Dahrose (new)

Dahrose The Beast of Gloomenthrall - by Jane Cousins was awesome.

The Beast Of Gloomenthrall A snarky, hot and fun romantasy. by Jane Cousins

Two very strong - kick butt - heroines in this read, sisters. Alia excels at all weapons. Whilst Peri uses her healing knowledge to kick ass.

Loved this romantic funny tale - as the sisters go on the hunt for their vengeance

message 76: by Rachel (new)

Rachel R I'm a huge fan of Jude from the Cruel Prince series. she is a wicked unique, deep, fck w me and die character. I love Holly Black

message 77: by Rye (new)

Rye no one can replace Kira...

but have finally succumbed to my need for some T.A White as I wait for the next Firebird Chronicles book and have started reading her Aileen Travers series.
The books get better and better as the series progresses, and Aileen softens and becomes more relatable - though never less kick ass.

message 78: by Fee (new)

Fee came across S.K. Dunstall and their Stars Uncharted series (2 books so far)

It's sci-fi - and has 2 kick-ass heroines; Josune, an engineer who can never be packing enough weapons. And Nikka, a body modder, specialising in transforming people's looks and health.

space pirates, evil corporate henchmen, and treasure to be found.

message 79: by Dahrose (new)

Dahrose going to have to add - Ada - to the list. Check out - The Inheritance by Ilona Andrews.
Capable, deadly and coming to grips with new magic and skills in a deft manner.

The Inheritance (Breach Wars, #1) by Ilona Andrews

message 80: by Cam (new)

Cam How about an unconventional kick ass heroine? One who makes chocolates and cookies? But is also an elemental mage with a poison testing sidekick bunny who can regurgitate what ever she needs to defeat the bad guys. Hilarious. And a hot PNR read.

Just love Gigi and all her wacky family

To Crave A Curse To Crave A Curse (Southern Sanctuary, #15) by Jane Cousins
