Thank you! She was my aunt, Maria Gluck, and she started and finished the memoir in her 90s. What amazes me most is that with just a middle school education she not only wrote it by hand, but she then dictated much of it using speech-to-text software, and then kept adding short stories, reflections, and essays, even after she turned 97. And yes, my role was editing and bringing it together into one volume so her voice could be preserved.
It’s incredible to be able to share not only her memories of pre-war village life and survival during the Holocaust, but also her perspective on family, aging, and society in the modern world. She wanted future generations to hear her voice directly — and I feel lucky to help make that possible.

That's quite a match: that she'd be able to do that, while you had the calling to become the editor.

“Calling” really is the perfect word! What began as writing my father’s story for my children (Private Good Luck) grew into an obsession to share my family’s letters (Pappus), since they were their last voices and proof of their existence. And finally, fulfilling my promise to my Aunt by editing and publishing her memoir - As I Remember… - felt like the true capstone, because her reflections look back with the eye of experience, answering the question: what happened next? What moves me most is that she tells the story in her own words, offering a woman’s perspective on work, resilience, beginning again, and aging in America.

Following up on Jan's comment regarding the cover, Im not sure how I know about Leroy Skalstad. Isnt he a well known photographer?
If this story is as frightening as it's cover, Im going to ask you for sleeping meds. :)
Wishing you much success.
Thanks Stacey! I found Leroy Skalstad on Unsplash -- he has lots of photos up there, all of them excellent. Wishing you a good night's sleep, after you read the story.

Thank you, Sherwin. I hope Beryl sees this! :)
Sherwin, you can post it again at Freebies, giveaways, discounts, if you like.
Hi Jan,I see your note. I’m trying to find Sherwins give away. I don’t know how to search through those many places.
I do have this book marked as want to read. I searched give aways under memoir and it doesn’t show up.
Beryl wrote: "Hi Jan,I see your note. I’m trying to find Sherwins give away. I don’t know how to search through those many places."
Beryl, can you scroll up and click on his "giveaway" link in Comment #719?
Thanks Jan! I just posted it at Freebies, giveaways, discounts, too!

I don’t see comment numbers. I did click on the give away link several times. The link takes me to give away that is many pages for over 1600 give aways. I used memoir filter to narrow search but it doesn’t come up then. I saw Sherwin’s other listing and when I click there it just takes me to the book listing which I already have marked as want to read.

Sherwin's giveaway here
It says not to enter until the 21st. Somebody can get a nice Rosh Hashana gift, maybe. :)
I am going to let Beryl and others have a chance first. Don't want to hog one.
Thank you Jan. I found it yesterday and set reminder to log in when it opens. Thank you Sherwin for the link.
David LyalinРассказы дедушки / Tales of a Grandfather: Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself
Hello everyone,
I’d like to introduce myself and my recently published bilingual (Russian–English) book, Tales of a Grandfather Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself (Sandermoen Publishing, Switzerland, 2025).
It’s a collection of short stories — tender, ironic, and deeply personal — tracing the Jewish family experience across generations and continents. The narrator, a grandfather, revisits the past through memories of his ancestors and his own childhood, bridging languages, migrations, and eras.
The book celebrates cross-cultural dialogue and the endurance of family stories — how they survive exile, war, and assimilation, and still speak to new generations.
Stories remembered, retold, and passed down across generations.
For grandparents who were once grandchildren.
For those who speak English, Russian — or both.
For anyone who wants to pass on something lasting to the next generation.
For those who remember — and those who want to understand.
Available in print and digital formats (EPUB, PDF, FB2).

"What Remains is Hope," the second novel in the "Heppenheimer Family Holocaust Saga." was published this month. My new novel follows four German Jewish cousins trying to survive in Germany and German-occupied lands during WWII. According to a review from Booklife by Publishers Weekly, "Readers will find this follow up to Suchman's prior novel, Stumbling Stones, both a heartbreaking reminder of the Holocaust's atrocities and a compelling tribute to a family's refusal to surrender to despair...Richly compelling Holocaust account, centered on the power of hope." You can find the book at https://www.amazon.com/What-Remains-H...

Hi everyone! I'm beyond excited to share the news of my upcoming book, A NOVEL CRIME, releasing March 31, 2026. It's a twisty, tongue-in-cheek crime caper about a writer gone berserk. From the back cover:
She wanted to write the perfect novel. Instead, she became the perfect villain.
Struggling romance writer and recent divorcée Marcy Jo Codburn feels like a failure. She’s green with author envy and longing for a book deal, a launch party with cupcakes, and the admiration of her daughter. But her dream of literary success is fading faster than her beige hair dye.
When she witnesses celebrated author Francesca Barber in a compromising position, Marcy sees her chance. Transforming into her bolder, blonder alter ego, she leverages Francesca’s secret to secure the ultimate coauthor.
As their collaboration spirals from Marcy’s modest Connecticut home to Francesca’s lavish Hamptons estate, both women discover that in the cutthroat world of publishing, every story has its price. With looming deadlines and more than one fraud to hide, their twisted partnership careens toward a surprise ending neither could have written.

I love mystery/crime and books about books, will an ARC be available on NetGalley?
Hi folks. I'm shy and thought when I joined the Club this year that I'd most likely lurk, but I've been enjoying the latest picks -- books that weren't on my radar -- and I live in an area where Jews are few and far between and need all the community I can get! (Not a knish to be found for hundreds of miles.)My debut middle-grade novel, Gittel, was published this spring (Fitzroy Books, April 2025). Gittel tells the story of 13-year-old Gittel Borenstein and her family, survivors of the Kishinev pogrom, who are starting over as farmers in a small Jewish agricultural colony in Central Wisconsin, not far from where I grew up. (Think Fiddler on the Roof meets Little Town on the Prairie.) The story is loosely based on my family history and is suitable for readers 11-adult.
Some tidbits from the reviews:
“Gittel and her family are characters that will be remembered long after one finishes reading.” —Jewish Book Council
“Thirteen-year-old Gittel comes of age and realizes her potential in this...evocative novel saturated in her Jewish heritage, the importance of family, and the power of hope.... Gittel provides a unique conversation about community through a historical-fiction lens that invites connection to the modern day.” —Booklist
If anyone is interested, I'm happy to answer questions and do free Zoom sessions with classes or book clubs.
