D. Thrush I'm going to try something I've never done before. I have some books that are pretty stagnant and to get them going, both books in a 2-book series will be free starting tomorrow thru Monday.

The first book has only a 3.8 rating (48 reviews) while the second has a solid 5 (with only 8 reviews). I'm only advertising on eReader IQ and My Book Cave, plus my newsletter. Hoping for some more reviews, especially for the first book (my lowest reviewed book) to bring up the average. So frustrating!

I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!

How did it go?

message 7203: by D. (new)

D. Thrush Thanks for asking, Lexie!

5/22 Thurs. - newsletter Book 1 = 11, Book 2 = 32
5/23 Fri. - no ad Book 1 = 39, Book 2 = 62
5/24 Sat. eReader IQ ($33) Book 1 = 152, Book 2 = 170
5/25 Sun. My Book Cave ($47) Book 1 = 338, Book 2 = 231
5/26 Mon. no ad Book 1 = 59, Book 2 = 41
Totals - Book 1 = 599, Book 2 = 536

1 audiobook sale of Book 1, 1 new review for Book 1
Hopefully, I'll get more reviews for both books which was the goal.

Current rankings in the 3 categories for Book 1 are: 3,3,81 and for Book 2 are: 4,4,100. So maybe I'll sell some full price books.

J. Well 2 books out of KU and only 1 left and it'll come out in June. Ad campaign for May finished and did not do as well as April, partly I'm sure because I was pushing book 3 in a series. Results were about as usual for most ad sites. The exception was Booksbutterfly which I had not tried before and did this time because I saw it recommended somewhere. I don't know where the ad appeared, I did not see it and despite the high fee sold zero the day it was supposed to come out. On a separate note, for the first time ever I had to days in May where I sold more books outside of Amazon than at Amazon. And I've been seeing various other retailers doing promotional special events. Kobo and Apple come to mind right off. They actually seem to sell a few books and getting included is free.
Well back to writing. Need a new book one of these days.
All the best,

message 7206: by D. (new)

D. Thrush I wasn't sure what to expect when I made both books free, but I think it was a pretty good result. At least, those books will get some new readers. No full price sales. I'm not getting any page reads either, so maybe I'll try going wide (again). Though last time I did it a few years back it didn't get any books accepted by BookBub. Anybody having any success going wide?

message 7208: by G.G. (new)

G.G. Hi everyone. Is a BookBub ad at $485 worth the money? That is a lot of green. Who has been successful with them. My book is a supernatural suspense, indigenous literature and historical fiction story. Thanks.

message 7209: by D. (new)

D. Thrush If you're referring to a BookBub featured deal in their daily newsletter, then the answer is YES. It's totally worth it. I've had 2 books accepted and it was worth every penny. BB deals sell books like no other sites, probably every site combined. But I haven't had any luck with the pay-per-click ads you create on their site. Lost $ there.

message 7210: by E.K. (new)

E.K. Frances I was happy with my BB featured deals too, but I did much better on the long series than the others. If it's part of a series I would definitely go for it.

I wouldn't pay that much for a New Releases for Less though.

message 7211: by G.G. (new)

G.G. Yes, it is a BookBub featured deal and is part of a series. I'm thinking hard over this one. Thank you D and EK.

Justin I did BookBub Ads 1 or 2 years ago and it was a total failure. I ended up paying them way more for nothing because no one bought my book.

Congrats, it is very hard to get one and I've heard they are like finding some nuggets of gold for authors who land one.

A Featured Deal is like Bargain Booksy's "book of the day" where it's sent out through email and listed on their site (I believe?) I heard the price ranges based on location and genre, but anywhere from $400 - 1000 seems to be an average cost. Hopefully those who have scored one recently can give a better price range.

message 7221: by Justin (new)

Justin :O That's a lot of money..I'm gonna pass on that.

message 7222: by D. (last edited Jun 08, 2025 10:56AM) (new)

D. Thrush BookBub's prices depend on the genre and your sale price. If you look at the average downloads or sales on their chart, you can see it's worth it. But you get what you pay for. You can lose $ on other sites or spend more and turn a profit on BB and take your book to the next level.

Lexie Conyngham We have two new independent bookshops opening in our area, and another new one not that far away. Lovely opportunity for a local author - shame this particular author is useless when it comes to going into a bookshop and finding the right words to say - will you please stock my books? host an event? Some people seem to find it so easy, and I just fall over myself and gibber!

Any tips for a complete wombat?

message 7224: by E.K. (new)

Don’t forget booksellers are usually book lovers and excited about meeting local authors, especially ones that do justice to history! Take a book or two along and offer to do a reading and signing

Justin I only just recently decided to open up my wallet so to speak for paid promotion and marketing so I'm still a no on bookbub as I know nothing about it and got burned last time.

message 7229: by J. (new)

J. Quiet here lately. Anyone doing promos? I have several ads running this month for the second book in my fantasy series at 99 cents. I'll post results once it's done. In the meantime, I wonder what anyone else here thinks of all the "sales" going on. Apple, Smashwords and now Kobo are all having sales at various times during July and while at this point I've put in one of my books (apparently authors can only have one book included) who knows what will come of it. At least it's no cost to me. But really, I wonder what is driving this. Is this an attempt to wrestle control of the ebook market away from Amazon? Or at least maybe cut into market share. What do the rest of you think? And now back to writing.
Stay well and keep going.

I'm only doing Facebook ads just now - hadn't the budget to expand, nor the mental energy! I think Smashwords has had regular sales for a while, don't know about Apple and Kobo. My sales were bouncing along the bottom for a while there, but a new book out has helped lift them a bit. Must get back to thinking about promos and submitting for Bookbub.

Hope everyone's well!

message 7231: by G.G. (new)

G.G. I haven't been getting notifications. Grrr.

But about to do another book tour. BookBub has been taking their time coming to a final decision on my book Editor Kill Fee. It's the one reviewed by PW and The Strand.

The tour with Love Books produced mediocre results, but I did gain about 10 new reviews in the UK, some quite nice: "intelligent mystery with a supernatural twist." I liked that one a lot.

J. Finally getting around to posting June ad results. Not as good as I'd hoped but then again I was promoting book 2 in a trilogy which probably isn't the best idea. Anyway here's what I got:
My Book Cave 6 sales
Robin reads 3 bargain booksy 2
ereader IQ 1
Not money well spent, in MHO, but I feel I have to do something to keep my name out there.
I have another lineup set to go in July, this time promoting the second book in my Ocean Cowboy series plus I am trying a FB ad for book 1 in my fantasy trilogy that starts on the 15th.
Hoping for a bit better results.
Everyone stay safe, keep writing and stay in touch.
