message 1001: by Elle (new)

Elle Swol Hello from the southwest! I have been a fan of mystery books since I was a kid. I discovered Mary Higgins Clark in middle school and that sent me down the path of reading mysteries and thrillers. Recently I have noticed the trend in the thriller category to lean more to true crime(ish) stories and they seem to be getting more and more graphic, and have no "mystery" component at all. I want to get away from that and that's how I discovered cozy mysteries! I don't have many bookish friends so I am hoping to get recommendations and engage with others :) I also enjoy sci-fi and fantasy books.

Mama Cass aka Bookhugger Welcome Elle, you've come to the right place.

Patsy Collins Hi!

I'm a British reader and writer of cosy (or cozy if you prefer) crime novels.

I read a wide range in this genre from the classics such as Agatha Christie, through contemporary such as Richard Osman to futuristic such as JD Robb.

Nylah Thomas Hi, I am Nylah and This is my first club on Goodreads! I absolutely love to read and always try to write a book but never end up finishing it. I live in Texas and I am eager to discuss some books! My favorite types of books are mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, and more. I am 11 yrs old.

message 1006: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I was not a big fan of mysteries until recently, I love more of the fantasy aspect. Then a friend gave me a suggestion to read a few books and have a terrible love of this genre. If only there were more hours in the day to fulfill my growing desires to read all these genres ;D

Absolutely! I have missed out so much while in nursing school - I have so much to make up for. The issue, where do I start?! Any good suggestions? Right now I am in a historical London mystery mood for some odd reason ;)

Mama Cass aka Bookhugger Jessica, Cass Green's In A Cottage in the Wood is really good, even though it's not Historical, it's in London and a spooky mystery, no gore.

Lori Radulovich Hi Everyone! I'm an avid mystery reader and have typically enjoyed historical settings, but I've recently read several current day setting mysteries and liked them. I come from a small, rural farm community and so I really enjoy small town settings. I'm a romantic at heart so I read both pure cozy mystery and those with romance. I just love to read and sometimes finish a book in a week while working full time. I'm looking forward to being part of this group. I live in Ohio and see we have other mystery readers from my state.
Lori

message 1011: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Easley Kathleen J. Easley Hi. I'm a new member and I'm excited to be here. I live in a small rural town east of Seattle, and like everyone else here I am an avid reader. There's hardly a fiction genre out there that I don't like. In the 70s I became enthralled with the works of Daphne du Maurier, the Bronte Sisters, Victoria Holt, and all the other classic writers of romantic suspense. I always thought I'd like to write a book like that. Then I discovered cozy mysteries and fell in love again. When I started writing, I thought, Why not combine the two? So that's what I've tried to do in my first novel, book one in a new series, Siblings and Secrets; A Brenna Wickham Haunted Mystery. It's sort of a cozy romantic suspense story, and it's live now on Amazon.

message 1012: by Salina. (new)

Salina. Hi! Salina here, I am from Canada.
I love reading, over the last two years I've really gotten back into it. I host a book review podcast with my mother-in-law on Spotify called Page Turners. I work really hard on being an active member on Goodreads, I keep notes on the books I read and keep up with my reading challenge. I mostly read e-books now, and I love reviewing books for indie or starting out authors.

We love to read anything and everything as long as it keeps our interest. But I do love a good mystery that keeps you guessing throughout the whole thing!

I also maintain a booktok (@pageturnerspod) and bookstagram (@dedicated.reader).

D. Ayres Hi all, I'm Batman...

By day, I'm a mild-mannered business professional, balancing the demands of work and family. But by night, I transform into a caped crusader of the written word, fighting the forces of mediocrity and boredom with my trusty pen.

I'm not quite Batman, of course. I don't have a butler or a Batmobile, and I'm not very good at fighting crime. But I do have a passion for storytelling, and I use my writing skills to create worlds and characters that will transport readers on adventures they'll never forget.

This year I took on the project of writing my first novel. It is a cozy mystery. I had never actually heard of this great genre before writing my book. Keen to hear more recommendations and join discussions in this group.

message 1015: by J. (new)

J. Witcher Hello everyone,
When I was a kid in school, I got into trouble defacing a dictionary. I hollowed it out to make room for a mystery book that I could read while pretending to be doing homework. Yes, bad. I also got in trouble for reading by flashlight underneath the covers at night, but you remember that one story you couldn’t put down until you read the end.
My name is Thomas but friends call me Tommy. I was an Air Force brat who lived in England Savannah and Orlando Florida before the mouse made it famous. I was born in Atlanta and being from the South, I suppose I should be thankful I wasn’t called Jim-Bob or John-Boy. Well, since I also am an author John-Boy might not be so bad.
I read everything. On long road trips, I used to read the Burma Save signs but now it’s mostly action fiction, mystery, and the occasional cozy. I just finished reading one called the Cannibal Caper which was pretty good.
I am retired now and living in the North Georgia mountains. I am a former Marine and a former police officer, and my last job was doing computer stuff at a company called Satair, which made Aircraft parts. Not a bad job as I got to travel to Denmark and France. I now write books and enjoy my grandchildren.
. I try to write grown-up mysteries without using a lot of profanity. The people I attend church with read my books, and I don’t want to be called to a counseling session by my Pastor and the church Deacons.
J. Thomas Witcher

All the best,

Never2ManyBooks Hello all. My dear and only granddaughter soon will be off to college. She adores mysteries, especially sleuthing sorts of things. And of course all things Jane Austen!

I want to send her some "cozy mysteries" for light reading -- specifically, cozy mysteries featuring female college students.

Not being very familiar with the genre myself, so far the only such mysteries I've found with a college setting feature protagonists who are professors.

Please can you recommend cozy mysteries in which the protagonists are college students?

Thank you so much for your time and helpfulness.

Wishing you all a wonderful 2024.

Kristin Thomas Hello! My name is Kristin and there are few things I enjoy more than perusing the Cozy Mysteries section of any book store and being impressed every time of the amazing pun titles! I swap cozy mysteries with my Grandmother a ton and we love chatting about them and giving each other recommendations! I'm looking to broaden my community here on GoodReads and look forward to getting some recommendations from all of you!

message 1026: by Joy (new)

Joy Hi Never2ManyBooks,

Not sure if you'll see this, but The Secret History by Donna Tartt is most definitely NOT a cosy mystery and deals with some quite heavy topics, so I'm not sure it will meet the criteria for what your granddaughter's interested in.

I'm not sure about cosy mysteries with protagonists as college students, but hopefully, others in the group might be able to recommend titles.

All the best to your granddaughter, and I wish her the best heading off to college.

message 1027: by Susan (last edited Jan 02, 2024 10:01PM) (new)

Susan Hi! I love reading and my favorite genres are cozy mysteries, clean romance, and middle grade. The last cozy mystery I read was Mrs. Claus and the Trouble with Turkeys by Liz Ireland. She is one of my favorites. I especially enjoy Kindle ones that I can stream through my Alexa app and listen to in the car during my commute. I have read all the Cruise Ship Cozy Mysteries by AR Winters and am working my way through the Library Witch Mysteries by Elle Adams. I have also read some of the Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens alongside my ten-year-old daughter! I have added them to the bookshelf for others to check out. I am looking forward to finding even more good mysteries to read this year.

Joyce Farinella Hello! I just got involved with Goodreads, and this is my first group to join. I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but cozy mysteries are my favorite. I got started back when Joanne Fluke had just begun writing the Hannah Swenson series. Since then, I've read countless stories. Currently, I'm reading two books, Gladwynn Grant Takes Center Stage and Arsenic and Apple Pie. I'm hoping to discover some other series here.

message 1030: by Jules (new)

Jules Howdy y'all,
I'm Jules, 52, currently in Utah, but I grew up military, so I've lived all over the U.S. (alas, never overseas). I'm a lifelong reader and writer with wide-ranging tastes, but mysteries are a new passion. I've watched them forever, and enjoyed reading them as plots in other genres. It's just been recently that I thought to try them as a genre unto themselves.

I knew from my viewing preferences that cozies would be the best fit, and they're not disappointing so far. My one complaint would be the overlap with romance, a genre I could do with far less of as an ace individual. Granted, I know a lot of the overlap is due to my fondness for a supernatural element.

I would love recommendations for supernatural cozies without a romance element. I need to investigate the group's conversations to see if there's one focused on requesting recs.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to exploring cozies more and getting to know everyone!

Zoe Ross Hi, I'm Zoe - I work in IT for the NHS (National Health Service for those not in the UK) I'm an avid reader and also a crafter. I love Cozy mysteries, and fantasy, as well as crime and mystery, and when they all combine I'm hooked.

message 1032: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer A Hi! My name is Jennifer. I'm 61 and live in Indiana. I read a variety of genres. I am currently working my way through the Bridgerton series (I've watched the series, so decided I needed to read the books. Lol) I do have a few mysteries I've borrowed from my niece, but I don't believe the actually are considered "cozy". I will definitely have to pick up some cozy mysteries.
Other than reading, I also enjoy watching football & basketball; gardening (flowers, not veggies)- and I'm a Master Gardener intern; love the ocean & sea turtles (so any cozy mysteries that take place in a seaside town would be great!); trying to get back into doing watercolor painting and have been doing some air dry clay; want to learn macrame; and enjoy traveling when I can.
I work as an administrative secretary at a local university and love it.

Being a cat lover, I am a fan of Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Brown, Cat Cafe Mysteries, Bookmobile Mysteries, and others where the cat or cats help to solve the crime. Hi, I'm not sure how this works either but I think somehow, we'll both find out. I didn't read many mysteries when I was younger but have as I've gotten older. In fact, that's what I mainly read now, though I do take time to read a bit of the classics (Dickens, Verne, Wells, etc.).

We are big readers. The Potter books are great fun to read, how fun for you to read them now, we anxiously waited for each one to be released over the years and have read the series several times.

What other types of books do you like? we are voracious readers. I am trying to encourage my husband to stop buying books and check them out at the library but that hasn't worked so far.

Although these days I read across a range of genres cozy has a special place in my heart as I grew up reading the Famous Five and Secret Seven books. I recently binged my way through a bunch of the Jo Nesbo 'Harry Hole' books, which are not cozy at all, but definitely a little addictive. Always looking for suggestions for future reads...

I've been an amateur sleuth via reading cozies and mysteries since I could read. Always convinced I could solve the crime early, imagine my surprise when Nancy Drew, Miss Marple, and Holmes tricked me with their ingenuity. These days, I love to mix it up between cozies, hard-boiled crime, thrillers, and literary.
Great to be here!
