message 56: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Vessels Hi everyone! I'm Stacy, an elementary school library media specialist from the beautiful state of Kentucky. I read a lot of kids books, as they are part of my calling. 🙂
I also love classics, romance that isn't too steamy, memoirs of people I've never heard of before, and most especially cozy mysteries. My favorite cozy authors are Joanne Fluke (Hannah Swenson Mystery Series with Recipes) and Laurien Berenson, author of the Melanie Travis Canine Mysteries.

message 57: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Landry Hi, I'm Dianne and I live in Toronto. I always loved mysteries but have found, as I get older, that many nights I don't want to be reading something heavy. A friend introduced me to cozies and I am now hooked.

message 58: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Prescott Hi, Diane.

...I don't want to be reading something heavy.

I think that's the appeal, isn't it? You know that nothing very bad is going to happen. When there's a murder, usually the person who was murdered wasn't a very nice person, and people's lives will often be better without him.

I've read books which are quite good and well written, but really quite miserable, and left me feeling mildly depressed, and needing read something light and fluffy to cheer myself up. A cosy won't leave you feeling like that.

message 59: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Rushford I can so relate to that. I love cozies. Love other mysteries as well. But always enjoy settling i n with a good cozy.

message 60: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Rushford I'm Pat or Patricia. As well as loving to read mysteries, I also write them. I live in the Portland, Oregon area, which is a great place for a setting. And for reading.

message 61: by Harriet (last edited May 12, 2017 10:59PM) (new)

Harriet Steel It's lovely to see so many people joining the group and also to see that many are teenagers. There's hope for the future of reading! Several have mentioned that they got their love of cozies after being introduced to works by writers such as Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle by their parents. I expect that Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock has helped too. I was lucky enough to see him when he was filming in the cathedral city of Wells in Somerset (UK). It was actually for his part as Richard III in The Hollow Crown. We were on our way back from dinner one evening when we were stopped by a barrier at the entrance to the cathedral close. We didn't realise what it was all about until the special effects people swathed the scene in artificial mist (no, it isn't always foggy in the UK) and out of it rode Mr Cumberbatch on a huge black horse. The poor man had to go over the scene about 10 times before the director was happy but we onlookers had no problem with that. He's very tall and just as good-looking in the flesh as he is on screen. Happy reading all x

message 62: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Hi, my name is Darlene, from Alberta, Canada. I recently discovered the Goodreads app from a librarian, who was kind enough to show me how to use it. I love mysteries of all kinds, cozies, historical ones, cat and dog mysteries, and I will read nearly anything else....except Romance. I hope to have the time to do some of the challenges here. So nice to "meet" all of you. I am still updating my book shelves, I need to input about 600 more cookbooks, as well as a few more fiction, so wish me luck!!

message 63: by April (new)

April Hello! My name is April and I'm a bookworm. I can't seem to help myself. I've had a love affair with books since first grade when Mrs. Fletcher introduced them to me with Misty of Chincoteague. I still have the Breyer.

I do love a well written cozy, though, and I'm glad to have found this corner of GoodReads! Other genres I enjoy are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Speculative Fiction, and thrilling non-fiction (currently reading The Poisoner's Handbook, which details the birth of forensic science).

I also write the Heirlooms of Deception series, which is cozy-ish and suitable for all ages (even if it's written primarily for adults). I'm pretty adamant about writing something that won't scar my children should they read over my shoulder.

In addition, I collect/use/love fountain pens and papers of all kinds. I tend to horde stationery, much to the dismay of my husband and the overstuffed shelves. My pen pals, however, love it!

message 67: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Hi all, I am Beverly, a children's librarian from Texas, and I just stumbled across this group today. As a librarian, I am really enjoying several library-based cozies: Jenn McKinlay's Library Lover's Mystery series; Miranda James's Cat in the Stacks series; and Laurie Cass's Bookmobile Cat Mystery series. I also read other cozies. I was introduced to mysteries back in the third or fourth grade when I started reading (nay, devouring) Nancy Drew mysteries. My mom loved Agatha Christie, so I eventually moved on to those. Besides cozies and other types of mysteries, I enjoy Christian fiction, science fiction, and fantasy; in both adult and children's formats.

message 68: by Caitlin (new)

message 71: by Randi (new)

Randi Hi all, I'm Randi, and after a long, long time of reading mysteries/thrillers/paranormal romance/urban fantasy/horror/dystopian I realized I needed a break from all the angst caused by blood and murder and kidnapping in situations that were quite real. So I landed here. Still blood and murder and all, but no so much of the angst, a bit more humor and mostly nice happy endings. I still love my other genres, but it's nice to have some relief once in a while!

message 72: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hickey Howdy! Cynthia Hickey here just back to Goodreads after what seems like forever. Love cozies!

message 78: by Papermaker (new)

Papermaker Hello all
I'm new to the group. I live outside of Chicago with my dog. I read a little bit of everything but I love Cozy mysteries. Most of the ones I read have a food background, Like Jenn McKinlay, Julie Hazy and Joanne Fluke.

message 79: by Susan (new)

Susan Thistlethwaite Hi, I'm a professor of religion and an avid mystery fan. I like all kinds of mysteries (except really gory ones!). I love this discussion because I learn about new authors whom I have not read. I saw someone on this thread post about being a fan of Elizabeth Peters. Me too! In fact, I have published my first mystery and I modeled my main character on Amelia Peabody because she is so brave! Here's the website where I write about that. https://mysteryandmayhem.org
I'd love to know what characteristics in a detective cozy fans like the most. Susan

message 80: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Prescott I'd love to know what characteristics in a detective cozy fans like the most.

That's a good question. I think, if it's an amateur sleuth, I like him or her to have some special skill which allows him or her to solve the mystery, and makes it plausible for the amateur to be ahead of the police - whether that's knowledge of human nature, like Miss Marple, or knowing about historical research, or having some specific local knowledge, or whatever skill the author chooses that works with the mystery.

I also like the detective to have common sense, and not get into dangerous situations out of stupidity or because they ignored warnings!

If the detective is a police officer, I want him or her to act professionally, with courage or compassion when required. And I'd rather they didn't have drink problems and/or marital problems. That's a bit overdone now.

message 81: by Shereen (new)

Shereen Vedam Hi I'm new to the group. Glad to meet everyone. I'm an author, mainly in other genres that have mystery threads. Glad to be here.

Finished this last night and DESPISED it!! I don't much care for changing POV, and most especially not when you need a flow-chart to keep track of all the characters who HAVE a POV! I read TGotT, and while there were no redeeming characters, it was still a good read. Not so this new one.

What kind of historical fiction do you like, Stephanie? I like to read (and write) historical crime/mystery fiction, thereby combining history and mystery!

I love finding out what others are reading, whether it's a mystery or a young adult novel or historical fiction. Reading and writing are my passions!

message 92: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Hi, my name is Sherri from Bay Area, San Francisco. I love reading! Recently, I mainly listen to audio books rather than reading, since I am mostly running around during the day!

message 96: by Shreyans (new)

Shreyans Hi, I'm Shreyans! I live in Mumbai.
This is my first group on Goodreads and I thought of joining this one as a good mystery book keeps me up all night, reading to uncover the clues, until the end. I hope to discover new books apart from the ones that I usually read. (Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Franklin W. Dixon, etc)

Cheers :)
