S.S. Jung Hey everybody!
I am Scott Jung a new author and new to goodreads. I have had my first book published on Amazon and other sites this month. Yes it is a "Good Thriller".

Meet Cynthia Austin, a brilliant 32-year-old PhD neurologist whose career has taken her to the forefront of high-security scientific experimentation within the US Pentagon's Air Force Division.Assigned to evaluate a mysterious project gone wrong in the remote community of Gakona, Alaska, Cynthia soon discovers an global experiment with dystopian consequences. Fighting against rogue scientists, human experimentation, mind control and hallucinations. Her investigations uncover a plan to bring our government, institutions and environment— to an end as we know it. Only to open it up to other worlds.

I was so excited to read my first review too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative Reality Fiction
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024
This was a wild ride of a story the author described as alternative reality fiction. The book was a page-turning, enthralling espionage light thriller. At the end, the author explained the cool graphics throughout the book helped him stay on track since this was his debut novel. They enhance the storyline since this would be a decent graphic novel. I look forward to reading more by this author and hope this does become a series.

Looking for more friends and feedback.

When you click on 'add book/author', at the bottom of the pop-up screen below the search bar there are two options 'add link cover'. The circle next to link is selected by default. Check the circle next to cover and it is done.

It ticks all the boxes: murder, mystery, love-story, history. sexual violence, revenge and atonement without losing its subliminal theme: that we are all victims of our chemistry.

Glad you finally figured it out. Best of luck with the book.

Those are not ISBN numbers, those are Goodreads IDs. If you select a different version of the same book, the id changes. I thought the self help third book - the Vitality one did not sound like something you will write. Maybe you can drop a mail to the moderators to remove it from your page though as your experience suggests they don't reply promptly.

I would not know nothing about doing a promo. When I was trying to sell my book, a publisher told me to try and build a social media following. Maybe social media might become a moot point if your book is brilliant. But my research told me in a genre as crowded and competitive as crime thriller preference would always go to an author with a higher social media following because they bring in ready made buyers. I have one social media account outside of this - Facebook. I mainly have people from school on that and I am the eccentric stoner who posts about esoteric movies a few time a month, i.e. no followers.

To build followers you need a steady stream of inane content, I will rather focus on writing one good story than waste my time on making low-effort content. The irony is writing was supposed to be a perfect fit for loners, now even that is judged on your popularity.

Thanks Aditya: I would have thought someone from the Librarians' group would have known that. Yes, I used the ISBN ref instead of the ASIN as you did. But they both get there.
What you say about social media is my experience too: I have no inclination to get swept up in idle gossip but if it's is something that works I suppose I might have to. I am registered with Facebook but I haven't got past my profile page.
You should be sending your movie crits away to papers and periodicals, you really are very good at it. A good critic is almost as important as a good writer: it's a matter of which comes first: the cart or the horse. BTW, you might like Getting Tyson once you've got used to the Cockney language. Keep posting

I was told Facebook is not really a good site to promote your book. Instagram is better. The quickest way to get followers on Insta is if you are good looking. On Insta it works like this - I am a writer, here I am writing in a top four sizes too small for me and bingo 4k followers. Well I could wear a top four sizes too small but don’t think it would help me. There is always Twitter (X) but it has the reputation of being the most toxic place on the internet.

I don't know if sending my movie reviews to local papers will get me a job, I have never sent them. But 90% of movies I watch don't even release in my city. So if I get a job I will be stuck watching crap which I don't want.

I usually illegally download my books but I would not pirate yours. Importing the paperback is costly so when I sign up for Kindle Unlimited, Getting Tyson will be the first one I read.

Thanks for the low-down on social media, Aditya. Perhaps wearing nothing at all might work? Not for me though: not much to see these days. The opposite might work too: a really ugly, frightening visage, like Frankenstein, he did quite well.
Surely you get big international films there? Otherwise try journals outside India. If one can get films downloaded these days it might work.
I don't know anything about getting books illegally. Do you mean importing books to India is illegal?

Aditya P.K. wrote: "Thanks for the low-down on social media, Aditya. Perhaps wearing nothing at all might work? ..."

Ever since reels became a thing, I have never made one, people are heading in that direction on social media.

We get the big summer blockbusters but usually not the prestige dramas. If we get them the nudity is removed and any vulgar dialogue might also be muted. I want to see a movie as the director intended and I don't want the Censor Board playing moral police. Recently they removed a tepid sex scene from last year's biggest movie Oppenheimer. Only Middle Eastern countries made the same edit. At least they don’t pretend to be a democracy. I sent my reviews to a few online sites. The ones that were interested were not paying anything and did not get enough traffic to boost my visibility. So I said no, thanks.

I read e-books on my phone and download them from a website called z-library. You will pretty much find any major book there. It is technically illegal but I see it as my alternative to a library otherwise I would not be able to afford the books. I have not read a physical book in a decade. I prefer e-books. They are more convenient.

Importing books is not illegal but it is costly. For example. Buying a paperback copy of Getting Tyson costs INR 1400 which is a bit much for a novel. I can buy the e-book version for INR 237 but I have never bought an e-book (or a movie) so I don't know if the format will be supported on my phone. The other option is to pay for the monthly subscription to Kindle Unlimited which makes plenty of independent books including Getting Tyson available. Your paperback costs so much because Indian retailers don't stock it. For comparison's sake The Catcher in the Rye paperback costs INR 238 and the e-book costs INR 185. Dennis Lehane's recent bestseller costs 454 and 324 respectively. I used Amazon prices.

That's really interesting about censorship. I had no idea you suffered that in India. It's horrific for us to realise that vast country cannot enjoy the freedom of choice that we have. I know the Muslim countries exercise such control; that's what being a Muslim is all about: control. But I didn't expect such a cosmopolitan country like yours to do the same. You must start a thread about politics in India. Or join the World, Writing, Wealth group that i am in: we do a lot of politics there.

I also didn't realise that Kindle Unlimited was a pay service: I know our books go in there for free. So it won't help if I do a free period with Tyson? Won't you be able to download it onto your app?

You did the right thing turning down a z-library: it is too easy to get caught out on such websites. But your crits are worthy of The Times Of India and such periodicals. It would do no harm in sending them a few and seeing what they say.

I will have to look up the exchange rates to appreciate the costings on books. I will find that interesting.

I think we increasingly live in a world where every group is trying to shut down criticism against it. India has regressed a lot under the current regime and it is getting worse. Recently Modi has stated he was not a natural birth, he was a gift from gods. General elections are going on and even 5 years ago he would not have said such a thing. He has divided the whole country on basis on religion. It is not just the ruling party, tyranny thrives everywhere in the country. In my state a different party is in power and that has also jailed people for a couple of weeks for sharing political cartoons on social media. I think the only way to deal with dictatorship is comedy, that's why I want to write and include a stand-up in my movie if I can. I think your generation enjoyed a more liberal world. My generation is experiencing a shift to right wing dictatorships all around the world.

I checked Kindle Unlimited. It is free for one month. I will soon download Getting Tyson and let you know what I feel about it.

I did not turn down z-library. I turned down movie blogs that wanted to use my reviews without paying me. I had some interest from a couple of personal blogs. I felt they were too small to help me build an audience, if I let them use my reviews without payment I am just helping them grow without any major benefit to me. Z-library is my best option to get free e-books so I still use it but I read a lot less now. I realized I don't have a novel in me so I concentrated on watching more diverse movies because my next target is making an indie.

That is so useful to hear your opinion of Modi and what is going on with him. We don't get any insightful news of Indian politics but there has been enough for us to be very worried for the direction Modi is taking in world and domestic politics. By coincidence, only today we have had news that he is suddenly praising Gandhi but he made the bloomer that he wasn't famous until Richard Attenborough made a film about him. He doesn't seem to know that he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four time, between 1937 and 1948. It is ironic that he now praises him as a national hero but does not follow Gandhi's secular ideals. In 1946 Gandhi said that he would die for his religion but that it was his private affair and had nothing to do with the state. What a pity Modi doesn't follow suit.

I shall be very happy if you are able to get Getting Tyson. If not I will have to send you a copy

Paul Alkazraji Very happy with this new review of my short story ‘Beni’s Game’.

‘This was a super quick read being a short story of around 10 pages - but honestly this was such a great read. I read The Migrant by this author about a year ago and remember that although it wasn't my usual genre, I'd been really impressed with the writing style and content of the story.

Beni's Game was along a similar theme. Beni is on his way back to Albania having been deported from the UK. We start straight into the action with a high speed race for the two men to get to the airport to meet Beni's flight - so this sets the tension and fast pace of the whole story. I loved that the writing pushes us to see this story in a certain way - but all is not as it seems at all.

Being so short, I expected not to feel that connected to the characters - but was surprised at how intrigued I was by them all. Focussing on 3 main characters, again, we see them throughout in a certain way - yet again, things are never as straight forward as they seem!

This is a very topical issue, especially here in the UK and this story really highlights that we should always be compassionate and treat everyone equally. Judging people from a nationality or a religion or even a race is just unacceptable and we all need to be more mindful of issues around the world and within our own countries and treat everyone with the same respect we hope to receive ourselves as you really never know what other people are going through!’
‘Sonja’.

Mary Dear Sean and Janet,

Can I recommend a book on here? The author is 'in the sticks' and will be for sometime. He is working with a group of people that provide aid to families caught in a conflict - they remain 'off the grid' while 'in country' and have little time when 'out of country'. I've met him. He's become a good friend of one of my friends and whilst he was in London, securing finance for 'the project', he stayed over at a friend's house.

Dangerous Heritage: Past secrets are best left undisturbed.

Hi I would like to introduce my first novel which is a mystery/thriller called Dangerous Heritage set in the present and during WWII.

Genealogy has never been more popular but those considering a journey into the past should be prepared for the unexpected as adopted Michael Calvert discovers when he decides to investigate his birth lineage. It is the millennium, and journalist Michael is in professional and personal decline. When he decides to research his family tree, his enquiries have profound consequences for those he encounters in his bloodline. However, he also disturbs a dark secret which had once endangered his ancestors, and which reignites to threaten Michael sixty years later.

Set in wartime London and the present, the story is told through the eyes of Michael and his grandmother, Flora. As Michael tracks her footsteps through time, it becomes clear that Flora carried a secret that others were prepared to go to any lengths to suppress. But what was it? What was so damaging that it was worth violence and assassination even decades later? Dangerous Heritage is a mystery thriller with an exciting denouement, but it is also a voyage of self-discovery, romance and forgiveness.

Some of the content is based on fact and personal experience which I hope will add some authenticity to my efforts and increase your enjoyment.

No doubt I will find out soon enough. Thank you for your attention, Rob

Michael Springer I just received this excellent review on Amazon from an American person who purchased my novel, The Flower Bed The Flower Bed:

"Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2024
As a former educator, I started my career teaching English literature for 20 years. Amidst the standard required “classics”, I always added modern authors to the year’s required reading lists. If I were still teaching those classes and students, I would add Michael Springer’s ‘The Flower Bed’ as a required read for the year. Very few novels have all these strengths overlapping at the same time: intricate, surprising plot turns; characters who are not caricatures; a narrative that reaches beyond the book jacket’s message, and some unique surprise … something that the author did differently than anyone else. Michael’s level of detail, his literal juggling of plot twists and turns, his recircling attention on Louis while veering in multiples of other directions … just, just superb. I would choose ‘The Flower Garden’ as required reading just for its demonstration of a writer’s craft."

Lauren Hope Hello everyone!

My name is Lauren, I recently published my first psychological thriller called Mythomania A Tale of Lies, Love and Destruction. This novel explores themes like obsession, toxic relationships, and manipulation. If you enjoy intense stories with deep and complex characters, I think you might like it.

Here’s the link to learn more: https://bookshop.org/a/107390/9782958...

I’d love to chat with you and get your thoughts on these themes. Do you think the line between love and obsession is often blurred in novels? How do you perceive this boundary?

Thank you for your warm welcome, and I look forward to connecting with you all!

Genre: Suspense/Mystery/ Thriller

Summary: Jade is a stubborn, persistent, and compassionate seventeen-year-old girl with some grit and some wit. She is sold to the highest bidder by her stepfather, a man once a hero to her, but now a monster. And he wouldn’t be the only monster she would have to face. Nor the only monster she would fight. Because she would fight. She can’t help but fight, even when she knows the odds are against her.

When Jade is sold to a wealthy businessman, Ivan, she expects to become his sex slave, but things take an unexpected turn when she is gifted to Ivan’s brother. Seemingly now in the clear, Jade quickly realizes that Ivan remains a constant threat, and he shows no intention of ceasing his pursuit, despite his brother’s demands not to touch her.

Meanwhile, there is a mysterious man who has been looking for Jade when he realizes she may be in danger, but every time he gains an inch, he loses a mile. When he finally manages to get her to safety, Jade has a hard time truly escaping her monsters when her mind won’t let her forget what Ivan did to her. But perhaps forgetting her monsters isn’t how she’s meant to overcome her battles. No. Perhaps facing them is the only way for her to have her victory. So this time, if he comes for her, she’ll be ready. And she’ll fight.

P.K. Davies Has anyone else realised that Goodreads no longer thread these pages (and many others) via our email links anymore? So we have to go looking through the group feeds to find the latest news of our members. This will have a profound effect on this thread: instead of your promotion feeding to all group members they won't see it unless they want to look for new publications - and how many people will do that. This effectively lessens the usefulness of Goodreads to authors - and readers.

With the help of his mother, he gets his first case, and after some difficulties, he solves the murder of the next-door neighbor’s granddaughter. The case made him famous—and rich! The father of the murder victim gives him a million dollars. Life, for the first time in his miserable life, is good for Tom.
But now, someone is trying to kill him. Who? Why? To find out, Tom must become a P. I.—Again!

Paul Alkazraji ‘Beni’s Game’ By Paul Alkazraji.

A short story set at Tirana International Airport.

"Skilfully crafted...” Val Fraser, Digital Editor, Sorted Magazine.

Luan rammed the gears of the Mercedes from second to fourth, and surged down the wrong side of the airport road past a line of cars, flashing his headlights. Jude was thrust back deep into the leather seat with the acceleration. The sky ahead of them had streaks of lilac and molten iron below the black heights as a lone aircraft banked down with white lights pulsing on its wing tips...
