I love this question, because all writers, regardless of experience, has faced this issue before. Here is my answer.

1. Usually one reason for wanting to give up is plot related. You have the meat of the story, but not all the bones to hold it together. Plotting comes easy for some, and not so easy for others. If the reason is plot related, my suggestion is to allow someone you trust to read and give their advice on what they feel is missing or what the characters should do. You'll be surprised of the answers you get. As a book coach, I have aspiring authors to send me the basic outline of the plot. Usually I can spot the problem, point it out and they move on.

2. We also get this feeling when we feel the plot is too weak. If this is the case, and I suggest this strongly, add a subplot that will send your characters into a tailspin. Make your antagonist the mother of all antagonist, then help your protagonist overcome, triump and prevail!

3. Kill off your little darlings. Don't know what this means? Authors little darlings are all of the scenes that are well-written but doesn't propel the story along. As authors, we become attached to these scenes and allow them to survive. It's these scenes that often give us writer's block, because after we write it we ask, 'Hmm...where do I go with the story from here?' If you ever ask yourself this question, read over what you have to see if there are some darlings to kill.

4. Listen to the voices!!! I can't stress this enough. While writing, sometimes our creativity gets away from us. We're pounding at the keys and characters are running, making love, scattering from disaster. We're on a roll and can't stop because we're experiencing the best 'writer's release.' But then we read back over what we have and we notice that one scene may have taken us off the path toward the plot. Now here is where things get sketchy! Going off the path means a totally new direction. Some writers can handle this. Others cannot. Do what's comfortable for you. If getting back on the original plot is best for you, do that. I, on the other hand, am a pantser. My best work was derived from getting off the path of my original storyline. So listen to the inner voice. If you listen carefully, you can hear it telling you to stay on or off the paths, to not add a scene, to add something here that was missed, to embellish here, etc. I call the voices 'fairy writers.' Follow and they can lead you to bliss and success.

5. Don't over think your novel's plot. Yes, we all want the bestseller that will achieve worldwide attention. So what do we as writers do? We try to get as much into the novel as possible. This can pollute the story and make it hard to follow as a reader. Stick to the plot, add your subplots, as many as you can professionally handle, then make things as simple as possible. You will find that simplicity mingled with your style and flow will help you complete that manuscript in no time.

Here are only a few answers to the question. I hope it helps. If not, contact me one and one. I'm always willing to help. :-)(less)

Not Sure How to Rate Your Success as an Indie Writer?

Most indie authors won't share honestly with you their book sales for one reason and one reason only. They're ashamed to say, "Today I sold no books." or "I sold only one book today." or "I sold four books today." or "My current Amazon Rank is in the millions." The list of reasons can go on and on.

Am I one of those indie authors? No. I have absolutely no shame in my game! First and foremost, I'm a Read more of this blog post »
