Isn't that how Jenks got drunk from honey in Kim Harrison's novels?
I actually went and read the Fever series because of your review and boy was I ever disappointed. (Your book preferences tend to match mine fairly closely). The writing in this series is just so much better. Sure there are parallels but at least in this I didn't have to suffer through pop-culture references that made no sense, over descriptive product placement, and plot holes the size of China.
Interesting! I read the faefever series.. there are some similarities, but I think that is somewhat inevitable with any fantasy novel. Alina was a witch whose sister died .. yes, unbeknownst to her...witches vs demons.. and all that. It was also set in Scotland I believe-it’s a mystical place with a rich history in mythology and the supernatural. And Barron’s is the super hot book store owner/ immortal mind controller
Yes, panty wetting love/hate love interest that helps Alina learn how to use her powers- and vagina! But the story is different in my opinion. Thank you for your review.. It’s was a good comparison and I liked to think about and remember that series also-it was very good! You have good taste in books!
I totally hated Mackay as Kiaran's surname as well. I mentally changed it to Kiaran whenever I saw it. Ugh
Worst cliff hanger ever!!! I wouldn’t even call it a cliff hanger!! It just randomly stopped! Which was super weird bc I was listening to an audiobook!! I thought it stopped working 😭🤣
I agree with most of what you said exactly. The story had potential but so much of it became frustrating after a while. The repetition, the pointless love triangle, the MC being perfect at everything and her turning into a bloodthirsty killer not getting the author's attention as it should have, etc. This story had so much potential but fell flat in the end.
Never mind drinking whenever you read “crimson suits you best”. Take a shot whenever she uses the word “slaughter” and you’ll be dead before you finish the book
Your review has similar reasonings to why i also gave this story 3 stars. (Though i loved Derrick 🫣) i haven’t read the other series mentioned but honestly this did feel like a story targeted at a younger audience, which as a YA it should, but i’m used to seeing..more from other YA fantasy i’ve read.
And don’t get me started on the emptiness i felt. As you said, it was hard immersing myself into the story because of how flat and fast it read. Like, there was no depth to anything besides the fae as a species.
I wanted to read the whole series before but now I think I’m just going to leave it. I was hoping maybe it was going to go into more depth in the next book, but i’d have to check others reviews on it first.
