Author, artist, and sometime philosopher, Carmen Dominique Taxer was born in South Africa with familial roots across the globe. She began her career with early scribblings of the dark and twisted, and this love of dark Gothic Horror, and equally dark Romance, has only grown over the years. Her first love was vampires, and to this day she cannot write without the words pouring out in the shape of roses, blood, and thorny kisses.
Carmen uses the presence of vampires in a fictional setting to give voice to the struggles and successes of humanity, painting a portrait of the world that is both dark and beautifully highlighted with love conquering death above all else.

She and her husband and co-author, Richard T. Wheeler, have constructed a univ

One sparks the other and vice versa. I think, most people are obsessed with pain, but society doesn't allow them to feel it, and they don't allow themselves that pleasure either. Pain is a beautiful thing. It stirs people to paint with desire and anger, and it makes us write books. Endless words devoted to something we hate and cherish all at the same time.(less)

I'm finding more and more that writing from a female perspective is difficult. I get frustrated by the need to languish in emotion and oftentimes, the female voice leads into a simpering need to be comforted, which my author-brain is starting to perceive as weakness. Instead I want to write about the "weakness" of men. I want to explore how they react to the obstacles stacked against them. Seth is a passion of mine because he is the only character that has remained constant through twenty years of writing. I have folders of writing from my younger days that revolved around him. Dmitri is the exact opposite of a romantic hero in practice, while being one in theory, and I love his dichotomy, as well as his desire to nurture love, in spite of his inability to maintain it.(less)

“She reached forward and lifted her uncle up into her arms. He was still too weak to resist, and she comforted him with a stroke of her fingers through his greying hair, softly kissing his lips, tasting the blood with a shiver of anticipation, and moving her kisses to his cheek, the line of his jaw, the crook of his neck where his pulse thundered to push the shadowy blood to its destinations.
“Know that, when I do this, I’m doing it, to ease your suffering,” she whispered, lips pressed to his skin, her fangs pressing behind them hungrily.”
Carmen Dominique Taxer, And Blood Divides Us

“Ida tried not to sigh.
“What do you think of your husband?” he asked.
“He was rather short,” Ida said without thinking. When Aubrey didn’t respond, she thought that maybe she ought to elaborate and she said, “And beardy.”
That was as much as she could remember of him in the midst of the chaotic events. He was short, bearded, quiet. But mostly short.
“He used to be an officer,” Aubrey said.
“So I have been told,” Ida tried, again, to keep the cheek from her voice though she was quite certain that she was failing.
“In the Varangian army,” Aubrey continued.
She resisted the urge to comment on how she didn’t care.”
Carmen Dominique Taxer, Blood Pearl

“Dmitri’s nerves calmed as he walked through the hedgerow maze, easily finding his way to the centre, sitting awhile.
He had walked the grounds three times, before he finally went into the graveyard, looking for Sveta’s grave. It was easy to find. Easier since he had been to it every night since her passing. When he closed his eyes, he could still see her, strawberry hair blowing in the afternoon autumn wind, face flushed with laughter, eyes sparkling.
She’d been a plain girl too. But she’d loved him.”
Carmen Dominique Taxer, Blood Pearl

“I cannot express it; but surely you and everybody have a notion that there is or should be an existence of yours beyond you. What were the use of my creation, if I were entirely contained here? My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it. My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.”
Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

“The night is the hardest time to be alive and 4am knows all my secrets.”
Poppy Z. Brite

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”
Oscar Wilde, The Critic As Artist: With Some Remarks on the Importance of Doing Nothing and Discussing Everything

“I see now that the path I choose through the maze makes me what I am. I am not only a thing, but also a way of being—one of many ways—and knowing the paths I have followed and the ones left to take will help me understand what I am becoming.”
Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon

“I´ve always wanted him to love me the way I loved him. He did love me, I know he did. Just not the way I wanted him to.

"And it´s so different for a lot of people I´ve known. One partner doesn´t love the other enough to stop drinking, or gambling, or running around with other women. One is the giver and one is the taker. The giver wishes the taker would stop."

"But the taker never changes," Luke says, though he wonders if this is always the case.

"Sometimes the giver has to let go, but sometimes you don´t. You can´t. I couldn´t give up on Jonathan. I seemed to be able to forgive him anything.”
Alma Katsu, The Taker
