Her mom was abusive because she was an alcoholic. I don't think the book gave us any clues that Anna was also one, but I suppose it's possible. Anna was so protective of Ella. That makes it hard for me to believe she would push her mum off the balcony. She would have to do it holding the baby or put her down to do it. Perhaps Sherry is correct with her idea that Laura only sent that note to try to continue to mess with Anna's head and make her miserable. Regardless of what was meant, it was unnecessarily ambiguous, and I feel only added for another shocking twist.
