Quo - Goodreads wants you to follow authors as a priority, as they are now author focussed rather than reader focussed, so they hide away the friend option for authors. if you go to the author page and look just to the right of the 'follow author' button there is a grey down arrow. If you click on that you get more options - add as a friend is one of them.
