Superfluous language is a trope of early camp, where writers were moving away from covert homosexual language. It's wordy so it can avoid telling the truth instead of outright lying, which doesn't make it nice to read but is just something to consider.
It's not really only about Baldwin, actual literature has words, unlike YA trash. :)
