      I live in the South where women refer to themselves as girls all of the time-- even professional women. It is SO perplexing to me. A girl is a young, inexperienced, child. Once you reach a certain age of maturity and accomplishment, you ought to see yourself as a woman and expect to be referred to as an adult person. People (mostly men) have used the term to denegrate and diminish women. That's just a fact. So it does carry some connotation to be referred to as the child version of yourself.
