When a teenager, or young person, is already aware of great evil in the world and that not everyone's life is like theirs. I think this is a very important book because these are things that happen way too often to people. It is a true story and there are far too many true stories very much like it. It's easy to stay insulated and think life is not like this, but it can be. When we read it we can understand more that our pat solutions may not be the solutions for someone else's life--and that telling everyone to just pull up their bootstraps and get over it works for some very extraordinary people, but not everyone.
It is naiive of us to think that these children don't know the real world. Last year, I taught 6th and 7th grade and when I had them do persuasive speeches, the amount of children who wanted to do theirs on sexual assault was startling. And these were 6th graders.
This year I teach 8th grade and I've assign this book and I'm glad I have. Students are already aware of the horrors of the world -- we need to tackle them in an educational way to change it.
