Claudia Thank you so much! I will let you know if I do come across any book that comes close.

Lauren Middlesex is brilliant!

M haha this is great, also a lover of your review, and came to your profile to see what other stuff you liked. "In vain I have struggled, but it will not do," what does a girl have to do to find a decent goldfinch-ripoff around here?
Maybe, if that's OK, I would like to extend the question. I loved the goldfinch because of the interplay between the drifting boy and the warm, father-figure furniture maker guy. Basically the theme of the lost drifter, finding a comfortable warm place on a rainy day. So, I'm not sure of you're familiar with Haruki Murakami at all, but he also plays this theme out nicely, but the other way around. His main characters are stable guys, who are a comfortable home to their unstable counterparts.

My question is, do The Lost Time Accidents and You Deserve Nothing remind you of this theme, and do you know of any other books that include this theme?

Ili Mais Have you read John Irving's "The World According to Garp"? It's a different type of book, but somewhat reminds me of Goldfinch.

David Levin I'm no Oriana Leckert, just some guy who also loved the Goldfinch so much that it's ruining other reads by comparison since finishing it. And someone who started following Oriana because of her brilliant review of it. The other two books that are very definitively in my top 3 along with it are "A Fraction of The Whole" and "Boy Swallows Universe", in case anyone is interested. I'm also scouring these comment threads for recommendations, and have listed the two above.
