It was the same problem with me! people always get away from the answer like... yeah... or when they do, i can't really understand if THEY are dismissing it, you know? But now Cookie answered it and she says no! So, I think i will give it a try! I will let you know as well!
This book does not romanticize rape. Vere is portrayed as a society where such things are okay or condoned, but that is more so to prove a point about it's people/culture if that makes sense. The author very clearly writes it in a way that it is 100% not okay or romantic, both through "the vibe" she writes it in and the reception of it from the main character (who's pov we read from.)
Everything that happens between the main characters is consensual. its a slow burn romance and its done SO well, however you have to push past book 1. It's merely set up for the whole trilogy so if you just read the first and stop there thinking you have a proper understanding of them, you're gonna be way off and not grasp them correctly at all. I think that's why so many people incorrectly say it romanticizes or fetishizes rape/slavery. They read only part of the story (or just the synopsis) and then deter others from reading an amazing book because they didn't have all the facts.
Suffice to say, i highly recommend it.
