leen ziad totally agree

Peaches If you read Fangirl, which Carry On stemmed from, the concept was in fact blatant HP fan fiction.

Samantha Even if it was fanfiction, who cares? Every Disney retelling is literally fanfiction. In fact the Disney stories are fanfiction of the old fables and so on. Much of Arthurian Lore was added onto over the centuries (ie fanfiction) and even great works we study in classes as classes are Bible fanfic. Fanfiction isn't bad. :D

Peaches Agreed-I think fanfiction is perfectly fine as long as you credit the source (which the author does in Fangirl); I just think it's odd avid readers are so unwilling to admit that it is when Rowell has no issue owning it.

Samantha Eh there's too many people who look down on fanfiction but like a lot of very popular recent authors started their series as fanfic that they then modified and published so I'm hoping there will be a shift in opinion of fanfic soon.

Erica Agreed! They're separate stories. Just because they share similar themes, doesn't mean they're comparable in that way.

Ucho A lot of fanfiction veers wildly away from the source material. And just because something is fanfiction it doesn’t mean it’s automatically bad or uncreative. It’s not an insult.
