A piece written in 1850 is most assuredly not "some Shakespearean piece of work." Hawthorne wrote in Modern English, as did Shakespeare. Granted, some of the language is a little hard to understand, and requires a dictionary, Google or an e-reader, but this isn't Middle or Old English. If you want an example of English that is significantly different, pick up Canterbury Tales or Morte d'Arthur. And the key to Middle English is reading it out loud. The spelling is different, but the words mostly *sound* the same.
