Kathy I like your description but I would not want to write like this. I do think he's a talented writer. Some of his sentences are masterful, however, I'm not willing to put the reader through every single detail that passes through my mind. The one reason I'm sticking with it is out of solidarity to the lost women.

Tia Gonzales couldn't agree more-----try Robert Musil, A Man without Qualities, style similar, again a journey, the destination is within u and only u know if u get there

Marianne I am in Chennai, India right now, and living amongst lives which are lost constantly. Injustices that will never be more here than just life. I have something of a sensation more than an understanding of the lost women of Santa Teresa. I get it, Kathy Stilwell, but I don't think restitution or any kind of forgiveness is offered to the reader, it is a journey, there is no end. I understand what you mean about the detail, Book 5 is a crucifix for that, but by the last Fürst Plûcker, I understand. It is my journey, he did not demand to be read, it is our choice. But with the details of the murdered women, I loved that, the attention to factual detail, how detached, how unemotinal, how very very mindful of our inability to understand the weight of the loss, to begin to identify the pain. It is masterful, you are right.

Jeanne I am a 58 year old woman and I don't know how many more books I have left. I really appreciate your comments because they don't judge somebody who just isn't up for it. I gave it a try and got tangled up and stopped. Maybe I could do it if I was younger and stronger? But for now, I'm taking a miss. I'll try that Robert Musil book. I love getting advice from this site.

Noah Excellent review, or answer, as it were.

Sara Wouldn't reply any better, as a Bolaño's follower!

Tia Gonzales i didn't like it in the beginning but kept going back...at some point i was taken over........

message 8: by Graca (new)

Graca Saramago was a great writer and won several awards. The way he wrote was completely different from Bolaño, even the way he thought. You can't compare them! Completely different styles.
