I get what you mean when you mention a popularity contest. If there's a book out there that's well known and good, it's likely to win over a book that's less well known and fantastic.
yep, I was glad to see broken Eye in the top 10 or something, then I was heartbroken when it didnt make it to the semi finals. "The Slow Regard of Things" somehow made it to the final rounds, despite being an atrocious book.
Admittedly I haven't gotten round to reading that series yet, I heard the first one was brilliant and the sequels didn't live up to it, but I'll have to judge that for myself. Twilight for example, got big because people who don't read enjoyed them, whereas people who actually read know there is a lot better out there, but because us readers are a minority twilight was all that was big for a while. Ah well, that's the way the world works!
