Hi Mark. I did not finish the book, but yes, currently here in South Africa, every politician is trying to enforce his own version of our history in the bid for land reform. I understand Mr. Orwell's ideas were way ahead of his time, but I still can not bring myself to finish this book.
Orwell points out to Winston that there is not a place where past events are still happening. In other words, if you destroy or modify records of history, the only history is inside of your skull. If you can modify that, who is to say what really happened in the past? Is there a "true" past? Your politicians are working on this theory.
The book is full of insights like this.
