Vanessa Hall Ooh, so cool! What an interesting plot - and even more intriguing since he's your relative.

Grace Johnson Haha, yes!

Jayna Baas Anyone named Maximillian deserves a story. Anyone who would pick Maximillian for a pseudonym definitely deserves a story.

Grace Johnson Yes indeed, Jayna!

Hanna Yes, that is indeed an intriguing plot! If I may add my two cents as a genealogist (well, an almost-genealogist ...), I would say it's likely that the name was changed. Could be that he changed it to hide his identity if he was an escaped slave (this from knowing nothing about your ancestry, if he could have been black or mulatto or something). I base this suggestion off of the "fifth"great-grandfather, indicating to me that he would have lived before the Civil War and possibly closer to the early 1800s. Is that correct?

Grace Johnson Thank you for offering your ideas, Hanna! He did live in the early 1800s - born in 1800, they say, and dying in the mid-1830s. He was killed in the last Indian massacre in Georgia. The newest information my family has gathered is that he married beneath his status (most likely a mulatto woman, as their children were extremely dark), and changed his name when he was disowned and left home. We don't have much evidence supporting that claim, though, or any evidence suggesting otherwise, matter of fact!

Hanna Extremely fascinating story to follow, though. It would be great to pursue that hypothesis and try to confirm it. If you ever want to write a book based on this, you could hire me to ferret out the truth. ;)

Grace Johnson It really is! Ooh, that's a fabulous idea! :)
