THANK YOU! I’m just about to begin my 4 years of study to become a librarian and it really bothered me. It’s only a little thing, but it kept getting brought up and it grew irksome as I continued to read. I have a feeling that a lot of people assume that this is the role of a librarian!
Yes, my son has an MLIS and is a real librarian. I think that some people think that anyone who works in a library is a librarian....not true!
Most likely US / UK difference. When I used to go to the public lending library back in the UK, anyone working there would be referred to as the "librarian" by pretty much any of the customers.
I think the difference here is *who* is referring to them as "librarian". The vast majority of patrons don't know the difference, nor do they typically care. A person who works at a library is a librarian, to them. I don't know that the author doesn't necessarily know the difference, it was most of what the characters did or didn't know.
At least, that's how I read it. I worked at a library for 8+ years and was referred to as a "librarian" by many patrons. None of the "actual" librarians were bothered enough by it to correct it since we all knew our roles and depended on each other to get them done :)
I wroked in an upper-crust American "college" (we award PhD & Masters degrees too). For the first 3 years I, with only my degree in Anthropology from that same college, acted as "head of Circulation". I learned the job and by the time I retired, 30 years later, felt comfortable calling myself "librarian" and was even considered so by my boss....
I felt no insult when Aleisha was thought of and called "librarian". TO Mr P she WAS. Heaven knows, many of the students at my college thought I was the HEAD librarian, because they saw me there every day. (Not so the head librarian).
