Ever since I read Slaughterhouse 5 as a teenager and deciding to take the aliens as wholy possible, whereas my teacher disparaged that option completely and only saw the trauma in the protagonist as the cause of them, I have been asking this question with every similar story I read.
I have decided that I agree with you in this case as well.

I do also think that we do not get the whole story here, but nowehere is it written that an author needs to cpmpletely tie up every losse strand at the end of the story, right?
