If you agree with the idea, Piranesi is not in a magical world, then the story shows how far one travel’s into their imagination to create a distorted reality to avoid having to cope living in a dire situation. That’s magical in itself.
agreed - the story is magical either way, and says a lot about people what people value once most of what they know is stripped away
