One's cultural and religious background might affect one's perception of the allegory, but as far as the parallel with Christ, as the writer was a Christian, that was, I believe, part of his deliberate intent.
Wolfsbane, you're right! Aslan does mean lion in Turkish. It also means "king of beasts" and "brave man" according to Google Translate. That's a very good point, as they both are good descriptions of Christ and Aslan.
