Ben Franklin was a self promoter. Well ahead of his time in that arena. He wrote his autobiography after retiring as a merchantile success; renowned author/publisher/printer; scientist of note; and well respected initiator of grand good works (University of Pennsylvania Board, Establisher of the concept of a public library, postmaster for the Pennsylvania colony, and even an improved fire department. He was much too busy to write the whole thing later, and after that, well, his writing fell way off (he died of course). I agree that his biography had to be left for others. I have read both Isaacson and Brands, and I greatly preferred Brands' (both are good)because I found it more readable.
