Anne Okay so we have Daniel or Russell for Lin. What about Karla and Prabaker? Natalie Portman for Karla? The only problem is fake accents can be off putting. Looking up German actresses and this lady looks suitable: Karoline Herfurth. Diane Kruger is gorgeous but my husband (who is from Germany) reckons she is too barbie-like for Karla.

Kingwahhaha my karla is cameron diaz

Anne hmm. I normally am skeptical of her due to over doing the romantic comedy bit but now that you mention her in this context, you might be on to something. She could be the right type for this part.

Zoe Karla is a dark haired green eyed carismatic woman not a blonde superficial American like Cameron Diaz :-(

Daniel Craig and his plastic fish face wouldn´t work. This character starts of a weasel bogan in 70s Australia, the book was written by an Australian and the character needs to be a weedy, bogan who finds some dignity along the way.

Anne The latest on Lin is Joel Edgerton. I don't know him but he sounds pretty good. He is too good looking but we are talking Hollywood after all. The other guys are all too old now anyway.

He was in the Great Gatsby, he is on the edge of becoming known in the US. I´m kind of protective of Lin, who was virtually an Australian version of a redneck but with brains and hidden sensativity who blew it on drugs, we had specific culturally things happening in Australia at the time, that I think Aussies recognise but were were isolated and completely unknown to Americans at the time. When I read the book my soundtrack was Cold Chisel, a late 70s Aussie rockband- check them out on Youtube.

Heith Ledger would have been perfect if he was alive, the right age and not traditionally handsome, but somehow attractive.

Anne Good points. I like that Joel E is at least Australian. Fake accents are awful.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree. It´s hard for us to watch Americans do our accent but it probably wouldn´t bother an international audience.

Anne Yes non-yanks seem to manage the American accent better than vice versa by a good margin. Angelina Jolie in Alexander the Great was the all time worst. Her hubby in Seven Years in Tibet was also painful.

The worst Australian accent by an American is Merryl Streep.

Anne Ah yes, the dingo debacle. That was problematic. The list of yanks doing extremely bad accents is interminable. On the other end of the spectrum, Hugh Laurie has to be the absolute best yank accent out there. The word "issue" was his only weakness.
